Lamborghini Murchielago LP670-4 SV road test report

LP670-4 SV

If we could award extra points for performance, the Lamborghini Murcielago LP670-4 SuperVeloce would top the lot. From 0-62mph in a mere 3.2 seconds and on to a stonking 212mph (209 if you go for the more angled wing for greater downforce), this hypercar is not shy about going forward. If you want comfort in your fast car, look elsewhere. The Murcielago LP670-4 SV is the most extreme version of one of the world’s wildest supercars, so cosseting suspension was never likely to be high on the agenda.

Performance Performance - 5 stars

If we could award extra points for performance, the Lamborghini Murcielago LP670-4 SuperVeloce would top the lot. From 0-62mph in a mere 3.2 seconds and on to a stonking 212mph (209 if you go for the more angled wing for greater downforce), this hypercar is not shy about going forward. From rest, the LP670-4 makes a grab for the horizon like very few other supercars can, yet it can also saunter through town on a trickle of throttle. However, it’s the way the Lamborghini sears up through the gears and between corners that makes it so very special. There’s 661bhp on tap from the 6.5-litre V12 and it reaches peak power as a giddy 8000rpm, so it’s no wonder the engine dominates the whole driving experience. Anyone driving the SV needs to concentrate fully on the task at hand, which is perhaps why Lamborghini doesn’t supply a stereo with the SV as standard. The six-speed sequential gearbox is worked from paddles mounted behind the steering wheel and it’s the smoother E-gear transmission Lamborghini has yet come up with, though it still needs a little care at parking speeds.

Ride & Handling Ride & Handling - 5 stars

If you want comfort in your fast car, look elsewhere. The Murcielago LP670-4 SV is the most extreme version of one of the world’s wildest supercars, so cosseting suspension was never likely to be high on the agenda. What you do get is brilliantly controlled movements from the SV, which helps to negate the car’s size and weight when using the performance to its full. Speaking of weight, Lamborghini has shed 100kg from the SV compared to a standard Murcielago and this has a big effect on the way the car enters corners. The SV turns in more crisply than a normal Murcielago and hangs on even more tenaciously, helped by the standard four-wheel drive doing its best to assert the authority of the engine’s huge power. The steering has weight to its feel, but it’s not heavy or unwieldy.

Build Quality & Reliability Build Quality & Reliability - 5 stars

A lot has been made of Audi’s ownership of Lamborghini and it’s all true. The LP670-4 SV may be pared down to the bare essentials of driving pleasure, but it’s still screwed together with care and consideration. It will need careful looking after, with service intervals every 7500 miles, but this is the price of supercar ownership. Reliability will not be an issue. Most owners don’t rack up enough miles to worry the car’s components and those that do report the Murcielago is one tough customer. The engine can trace its history back to the 1960s, so any bugs have long since been ironed out.

Safety & Security Safety & Security - 5 stars

Anyone spending £270,000 on a Murcielago LP670-4 SuperVeloce will be very keen to keep it in their ownership. For this reason, every one comes with a Navtrak satellite tracking device that can pinpoint the car’s whereabouts should it be stolen. There’s also an alarm and immobiliser. Safety is taken care of by twin front and side airbags, while braking is undertaken by carbon ceramic discs with ABS anti-locking. There’s also ESP traction and stability control fitted as standard.

Space & Practicality Space & Practicality - 2 stars

A standard Murcielago is not exactly the first choice of car for nipping to the shops, but choose an LP670-4 SV and you forget all notions of practicality. Sliding into the driver’s seat is an experience as you hop over the broad sill and through the gap created by the scissor doors. You need to be nimble to get comfortable in the racing bucket style seats that have no height or angle adjustment, though they do slide back and forth. The steering wheel moves for angle and reach to help you get comfy. Otherwise, the SV’s cabin is sparse. A small boot under the front bonnet can cope with a small soft bag, but that’s your lot.

Ownership & Value Ownership & Value - 4 stars

If the Lamborghini Murcielago LP670-4 SuperVeloce appeals to you and you have the wherewithal to afford one, then its value is in the performance and the smile it will paste on your face every time you drive it. It will lose its monetary value, but it will remains a supercar benchmark for decades to come and will doubtless appreciate into a modern classic. Still, you will need £270,000 to join the club and commensurately deep pockets to fund 20.6mpg average economy and 480g/km emissions. Then there’s top rate group 20 insurance, hefty service bills and secure garaging, though it does come with an unlimited mileage warranty. As for luxury kit, there’s climate control, electric windows and Alcantara leather upholstery, but you’ll still have to pay extra for the essential reversing camera or a stereo.
