The 2.5 litre diesel engine pulls well throughout the rev range with generous torque levels enabling the driver to pull away from low speed in 3rd and 4th gear without a problem. The vehicle could really do with a 6th gear however as at motorway speeds in 5th gear you tend to feel the engine working quite hard whilst at cruising speeds. The 2.5-litre CRDi engine outputs 168 bhp of power and 392 lb of torque. Engine details – common rail, intercooled, direct injection, VGT turbo. The Kia Sorento accelerates from 0-62 mph in 11.6 seconds.

The ride is comfortable and easy, however body roll is evident whilst taking the sharper corners. Our vehicle had the standard alloys on it, which if anything where a little small for a vehicle of this size.

Solid build quality and reliability is definitely a feature of the Kia Sorento. The vehicle exudes strength both inside and out. The road noise is pleasantly unobtrusive.

The solid build quality transfers itself to the driver and occupants of the vehicle who, as a consequence feel safe and cosseted inside it. Remote central locking and immobiliser are all standard on the Sorento. ISOFIX child seat anchor points with top tether, front and rear side impact beams plus driver, front passenger and side curtain (front and rear) airbags come as standard with each trim level. The Sorento received four NCAP stars.

Being a large vehicle you would expect the Sorento to offer generous space to passengers and driver. The Sorento however uses its size well and therefore the already generous space is maximised to create a huge luggage capacity to go along with the driver and passenger head and legroom.

Keen leasing deals have recently been available on the Sorento and its competitors invariably seem more expensive in comparison. Kit levels are generous, we drove the XS model which is mid-range and came with leather, climate control and cruise control all as standard. The CO2 emissions are 209g/km and you can expect to achieve, on average, around 32 miles to the gallon. At the time of going to press, the Sorento falls into VED band F - £210 a year.
