The 2.0-litre diesel engine offers superb performance but it is in the quality of the build that Kia has surpassed itself. The 7-year, 100,000 mile warranty is the best in Europe.

The 138bhp 2.0-litre diesel engine was added to the cee’d range in 2008 AND WHAT A FINE ENGINE IT IS! Comparable in performance with the equivalent 2.0 litre diesel units in much higher priced cars such as Audi and Volkswagen this engine provides a good spread of power throughout the rev range and genuine pull from a standing start.

This being the Sport version of the cee’d the ride is quite firm as the suspension is slightly stiffer and the alloys an inch larger than those on the other specs available. It is not however bone shatteringly firm as on some other manufacturers ‘sports’ models, Imperfections in the road are easily negotiated and the steering communicates what is happening underneath the tyres with aplomb. The steering does feel slightly heavier at lower speeds but again this is due to the larger alloys and may well be to some drivers taste as it definitely enhances the sporty feel of the car.

That 7 year warranty dominates this subject again! It displays a confidence in the product which other manufacturers have so far failed to match. The cabin feels to have been made with good quality materials with a soft touch dashboard and leather steering wheel adding to the ‘premium’ feel of the model we drove.

The Kia cee’d been awarded the maximum five-star rating for adult protection in the Euro NCAP crash tests. The car also received four-stars for child protection and two-stars for pedestrian protection. The cee'd scored maximum points in the side impact and pole tests. Every cee’d come with front, side and curtain airbags as standard plus active front seat headrests. Twin ISOFIX child seat mountings and anti-lock brakes are also standard but stability control will have to be added as an option on all but the top-of-the-range models.

The boot size is 340-litres which are about average for a car of this size. Driver and front passenger legroom is generous. We drove a 6’5” 19 stone Australian in the front passenger seat and he found it comfortable enough on relatively long journeys. Rear legroom is ok but four adults in the car would be its limit although the car never pretends to be a people carrier!

Residual values have yet to settle themselves for the Cee’d as it is a relatively new model and Kia are a bit of an unknown performer in this car sector. The 7 year warranty can only enhance them though and if you want an outstanding 2.0 litre diesel unit which rivals much more expensive marques in its performance AND Miles per gallon then you would struggle to find it elsewhere at the price of the Kia Cee’d 2.0 CRDi sport.
