3.7-litre V6

Get quoteInfiniti is better known as Nissan’s luxury brand in America and it’s coming to the UK next year (2009). We drove the rear wheel drive Infiniti G37 Coupe – do BMW and Audi have much to worry about? Yes the Infiniti brand is already eating into the German maker’s profits in the States and it could continue this trend when it arrives in the UK. We drove an early version…

Performance Performance - 4 stars

Under the bonnet you have a potent 3.7-litre V6 engine which produces over 310bhp. The maker claims the car can do the zero to 62mph sprint in 5.5 seconds while it has a limited top speed of 155mph. Our car was an American model shipped in for the launch, when it comes to europe the boffins will have remapped the engine so that it can meet euro 5 emissions. Even though the car was not european spec, it performed really well on the road and the V6 engine was glorious to listen to when on full song. If you’re a point and squirt merchant you’ll love this car as the engine has bags of power and overtaking is a breeze with 363Nm of shove at 5,200rpm. When the car arrives in the UK it will be equipped with a six-speed manual or advanced seven-speed automatic gearbox.

Ride & Handling Ride & Handling - 3 stars

We will know better in a few months time how the Infiniti G37 Coupe deals with our roads when it is set-up properly for europe. The steering was vague and very light while you really felt potholes when travelling over them. However, the upside is that the Infiniti claims these issues will be ironed out when the car arrives in the UK market in April 2009.

Build Quality & Reliability Build Quality & Reliability - 4 stars

Infiniti claims the G37 Coupe is “designed as a modern sports car without compromise.” The car is built in a solid fashion and all the shut lines fit neatly into place while panel gaps are nowhere to be seen. On the inside you’ll find textured aluminium trim inserts on the centre console, the instrument binnacle and the door panels which adds that little extra to your surroundings. Standard equipment when it arrives in the UK should include 18-inch alloys, leather, Infiniti Controller multimedia interface for sat-nav, climate and audio systems.

Safety & Security Safety & Security - 5 stars

The Infinti G37 Coupe come with Electronic Stability Program (ESP) as standard, while a Viscous Limited Slip Differential (VLSD) is included as part of the Sport package. It also is equipped with power-assisted four-wheel vented disc brakes which have a four-channel, four-sensor Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA) to get you stopped quicker and in a controlled fashion. The car has six airbags as standard, as is the pop-up bonnet, it is designed to offer greater crash protection for pedestrians. In the event of a collision, a small pyrotechnic charge raises the trailing edge of the bonnet close. This creates a larger buffer between the bonnet and the top of the engine, providing a more yielding surface which in turn helps to reduce potential injuries.

Space & Practicality Space & Practicality - 3 stars

The car is a sports coupe and although it will be called a two plus two – there’s not much room in the rear. Headroom is at a premium in the back seat thanks to the sloping roofline of the Coupe. However if there’s just two of you then you’ll have no complaints about the space. You can find your perfect driving position as the front seat can be adjusted thanks to the electrics to exactly the way you want.

Ownership & Value Ownership & Value - 4 stars

If Infiniti are going to take off then some serious marketing will have to be done as the maker is not well known in the UK. In saying this they do have time, as the cars won’t arrive in the UK until April 2009. The engineers shouldn’t have any problems in remapping the cars as they can use Nissan’s technology to do this, as they are siblings. The car should be priced around the £30,000 mark as its main rival is likely to be the BMW 3-Series Coupe. It looks like BMW and Audi should be worried after all…
