Honda Civic Hybrid Road Test Report

Honda Civic Hybrid

The Civic Hybrid is a capable, economical car with inexpensive running costs. The fuel economy is impressive but the same figures are achieved by many diesels. The low CO2 emissions (109g/km) could be the area in which it wins over most prospective purchasers.

LEE SAYS

Performance Performance - 3 stars

The 1.3-litre (94bhp) petrol engine can produce 114bhp with the aid of the electric motor. At speeds of less than 20mph Honda’s hybrid runs solely on the electric. The engine cuts out entirely when the car is at a standstill. The performance around town is excellent but the Civic begins to struggle when asked to accelerate swiftly.

Ride & Handling Ride & Handling - 3 stars

The Civic Hybrid is a capable performer and handles and grips efficiently. The ride is similar to the conventional Civic in that it’s a firm ride with responsive steering.

Build Quality & Reliability Build Quality & Reliability - 5 stars

This is a Honda and that means durability and reliability can almost be taken for granted. High quality materials have been used in the construction of the interior and Honda’s hybrid technology is now advanced enough to be as reliable as Honda’s name suggests.

Safety & Security Safety & Security - 4 stars

Front, side and curtain airbags plus active front seat head restraints come as standard. ABS with electronic brake force distribution is also fitted along with a stability control system to actively avoid collisions.

Space & Practicality Space & Practicality - 4 stars

Headroom and legroom is ample for both front and rear passengers. The boot is shallow to allow room for the electric motor’s batteries but large enough for most small families needs.

Ownership & Value Ownership & Value - 4 stars

This is a real double-edged sword. Excellent fuel economy, low CO2 emissions, low company car tax and no congestion charge are extremely appealing attributes but the Honda Civic Hybrid is extremely expensive for a small family car. The residual values are OK without being anything special (approximately 45% after 3 years).
