The Citroen C4 Picasso is a fine-looking, compact MPV that is practical, roomy and excellent to drive. The interior is an arresting site with quality materials and clever design features.

The C4 Picasso offers you the choice between two petrol and two diesel engines. In petrol, there is the 1.8 (127bhp) and 2.0 litre (143bhp). In diesel, there is the 1.6 (110bhp) Hdi and the 2.0 (136 bhp) Hdi. The diesels are the only sensible choice, offering ample torque and superior fuel economy, both diesel engines perform well but the 2.0 litre is the silkier and more commanding performer.

The C4 Picasso is an MPV and its most important role is transporting groups of people from A to B. The rear air suspension provides a perceptibly softer ride than the C4 hatchback. The suspension handles bumps and pot-holes well and the C4 Picasso grips the road well although the steering could do with being more responsive. In the main it is calm and secure but can have difficulties with speedy cornering.

The interior of the C4 Picasso is uncomplicated and elegant. The front of the cabin is furnished with quality plastics and some nicely placed chrome highlights but towards the rear you will see a reduction in the quality of the materials used. Citroen’s reliability has never been the best and this will always create a nagging doubt in the mind of any potential buyer. The panoramic windscreen is fantastic, creating an open feel that brings the sky into full view.

Occupants are protected by seven airbags; ABS plus ESP with traction control are all standard. MPVs often suffer from large blind spots due to large windscreen pillars; the C4 Picasso has slimmer pillars that still provide the modern levels of crash protection. Deadlocks plus optional laminated side windows will serve as an extra deterrent to thieves.

The C4 Picasso can seat five passengers with ease. A practical and spacious MPV offering ample head and leg room that is also to boast an extremely large boot (500-litres), the rear row of seats can be folded down and stowed to increase capacity to 576-litres. The three middle row seats slide back and forth individually and fold flat into the floor and thereby increase the load space even further.

The price of the C4 Picasso allows it to provide healthy competition to the Ford S-Max and the Volkswagen Touran. Good fuel economy and reasonably low CO2 emissions will lead to low running costs and low insurance groups. Residual values may be an issue with rivals in this class being far stronger.
