Citroen C1 new and nearly new ![]()

The Citroen C1 is available with either 1.0 litre petrol or 1.4 diesel engines. Essentially a town / city car, it is nippy and convenient around town but can still hold its own on the motorways. The 1.0 litre engine provides the car with plenty of urge; the 1.4 diesel is rather noisy but offers fantastic fuel economy.

This is a nippy car with accurate handling but the ride is firm with bumps really being felt as the C1 encounters rougher parts of the road. The car has an agile and responsive feel with good body lean. The car grips the road well but it is advisable not the push the C1 too hard as the grip becomes less impressive.

The cabin is very welcoming and built of high quality plastics. The Toyota Aygo does shade the C1 when it comes to attention to detail though. The mechanics of the car are tried and trusted and this should lead to reliability. The C1 is built at a Toyota-designed factory and will follow the strict quality benchmarking that has helped build Toyota’s reputation for reliability.

Anti-lock brakes and twin airbags come as standard. The Rhythm also comes with two side airbags. Cornering stability also comes as standard. Small cars are not always the best in collisions but the four-star NCAP rating shows that the strengthened supports in key areas really do make a difference. Stability control and curtain airbags are not available on the C1.

The C1 can seat 4 adults surprisingly well though it may struggle with passengers over 6 feet. The only way in which you will be able to carry a decent amount of luggage is by carrying no rear passengers and folding down the rear seats to create 751 litres of space. The boot is tiny and difficult to access. There are a numerous storage solutions and cubbies situated around the cabin to make the C1 a car that you could use on a driving holiday.

The entire C1 range is capable of more than 60 miles to the gallon plus it is also cheaper than the Toyota Aygo and Peugeot 107. Insurance and serving costs will be low (the C1 falls into insurance group 1). You should be able to pick up the C1 starting around £7,000; this offers wonderful value for money. The Citroen C1 will give you budget motoring, probably the best city car available.
