Performance Performance - 4 stars

The new Audi A6 range claims to provide even better performance than the previous range of A6 vehicles which relied predominantly upon the 2.0 TDi engine for the majority of its sales. The vehicle we drove used the very same 2.0 TDi power plant which produces 170 bhp at 4,200 rpm and perhaps more importantly a generous 320 Nm of torque at just 1,750 rpm. A six speed manual gearbox is designed to evoke the sense of driving a sporty vehicle despite its large estate proportions. With a new lighter frame, the A6 is more fuel efficient and low in CO2 than the previous model. This genuinely does help improve the drive of the A6, which we found to be swift and smooth, especially on the motorway. Turbo lag, which once affected diesel models, seems well and truly a thing of the past.

Ride & Handling Ride & Handling - 4 stars

In the past Audi- as with other German marques- has been accused of giving a very firm ride to its models, which can jar and feel harsh on the irregular road surfaces found in the UK. Though the ride definitely errs on the firm side, it is sufficiently cosseted to allow most of the bumps and holes to pass underneath the car without affecting the cabin, thanks to shocks and dampeners that work as they should. As with the majority of vehicles in the Audi range the new A6 Avant has a real ‘point and go’ direct feel to its handling which in this case belies the vehicle’s size and weight. The new A6, even in diesel and Avant guise, can be an entertaining drive around B and A roads as a combination of sporty ride and performance comes to the fore. The excellent seats in the A6 add to comfort levels and the sporty feel.

Build Quality & Reliability Build Quality & Reliability - 5 stars

One of the factors that makes the A6 such a favourite of high mileage company car drivers in the UK is its reliability and build quality. Never has a manufacturer been linked more with these two qualities and the resurgence Audi has enjoyed over the last few years has largely been down to its ability to deliver on this reputation. The materials used in the cabin have a feel of quality about them with the dash smartly and clearly laid out.

Safety & Security Safety & Security - 5 stars

Audi has introduced an innovation they call ‘Adaptive technology’ which takes the airbag safety system to another level, as it assesses the position of the seat and the level of the impact to adjust the deployment force of the airbags accordingly. Both front and side airbags are standard for the driver and front passenger in the new A6 range. Audi has also released a Backguard system, which is designed into the body of the seat and counteracts the dangers of whiplash injuries to the neck and head in the event of a rear-end collision. As standard, the A6 Avant includes ABS, EBD and ESP, cruise control, parking sensors, alarm and immobiliser.

Space & Practicality Space & Practicality - 5 stars

Audi claim that the A6 Avant can easily seat three passengers in the rear and we certainly found that to be the case. The seats are especially generous in their width which provides a comfortable ride over long distances. Centre armrests are provided in the front and rear which may not seem overly important feature but we feel makes a huge difference to the comfort level of this vehicle. The luggage area of the boot has a 565 litre capacity, with the rear seats folded this increases to a huge 1680 litres.

Ownership & Value Ownership & Value - 4 stars

There are offers available on the new Audi A6 for both personal and business customers starting around £375 per month inclusive of VAT with a £4805 deposit, even on the higher spec S-Line version of the 2.0 TDi. These great prices are influenced by the A6 Avant’s strong residuals which makes the model a solid proposition to business and personal leasing customers. Starting from £32,100 for 2.0 TDi SE version, the S-Line model will cost you £34,450. With emissions of just 132g/km and fuel economy of 56.5mpg, the 2.0 litre diesel models are very tax and fuel efficient when compared to rivals and considering their huge size.
