Audi A4 Saloon new and nearly new ![]()

On the road, the A4 delivers strong performance with improved power control through the gears. Both engine and road noise are quieter than in the old A4, and the Audi is better to drive, too, with excellent composure in corners and impressive levels of grip. Fuel consumption is economical and beneficial. Another nice touch noticed was the gear display that indicates a gear change when needed.

The ride and handling of the new A4 maintains high quality that Audi have provided over the years. Steering is accurate although slightly heavy, while the supple suspension does a fine job of absorbing bumps and imperfections on the road, even with the added 18” alloys and low profile tyres which exceeded expectations. The footrest seemed a little to far away compared to previous models but still a comfort to drive. The combination of tidy handling, excellent refinement and decent performance makes the new model a strong all-round dynamic package.

As expected from Audi, the fit and finish of the interior is first class. The dash design is identical to that found in the A5 coupé, and if you like your gadgets you will not be disappointed. Audi’s MMI cabin control interface complete with a colour screen is seen in the A4 for the first time and is standard across the range. Audio and climate systems are fully controllable through this tidy and neat functionality. The model we tested had the optional sat-nav and phone system integrated which I strongly recommend.

Audi are extremely consistent when it comes to safety and security. The car feels solid and secure on the road even at high speeds. Stability control and electric parking brake come standard and with the built in MMI cabin control system you have parking sensors which alarm with a diagram of your car displaying on the interface. The car has front and side airbags as you would expect.

The A4 is now known to be the biggest car in its segment. Back seat passengers have extra comfort and space now the A4 has a longer wheelbase. It now has a larger 480 litre boot which now tops the class.

The A4 gives you a lot of value for money especially now the car has dropped three tax brackets as CO2 emissions are down from 159g/km to 144g/km.

Already driving a nearly new VW Passat 2.0 Tdi SE (140) I naturally assumed the Audi would be a re-skinned version and almost indentical to drive. How wrong can one man be! There is a gulf of difference between the two cars and my Passat now feels like an unrefined tractor. The build quality is absolutely amazing and I thought the Passat was good. The interior is sublime and cosseting. The NEW Audi A4 absolutely blew me away with just how good a car can actually be. Having the same engine as my Passat you would assume the performance was the same? Wrong, the power is delivered way down low where my car struggles, and the Audi delivers it evenly and smoothly. Engine noise for a diesel unit is kept to an absolute minimum even at high revs and sounds unstrained no matter how hard it is pushed.

The ride seems to adapt to the road conditions and the car has stunning handling even pushed to the limits. It remains stable on country roads and the motorway.

The car just oozes quality from opening the door to sitting in the beautiful interior. All switch gear have a solid feel and using the controls are a pleasure.

It’s an Audi, what more needs to be said.

All the space you will ever need, huge boot and plenty of leg romm in the rear. I am 6 foot plus and find some in some cars I just can’t get comfortable. From the first moment I sat in the Audi it felt like I had owned the car for years.

In my opinion it would be hard to beat this car for sheer value for money, huge spec, great build quality and probably one of the best residual values you can find in this sector.
