Audi A3 Sportback 1.9 TDI Special Edition road test report

1.9 TDI Special Edition

Fantastic value for money makes the A3 Sportback a serious rival to the Golf and the Focus. The 1.9 TDI Special Edition is also a very green car and exempt from the Congestion Charge. Road Tax is only £35 a year.

ANDY SAYS

Performance Performance - 4 stars

When you consider that the 1.9 Tdi engine is aimed at those with economy and low emissions in mind, you would be forgiven for thinking that with these impressive figures you would be making some kind of compromise with performance. The car we tested was a pleasure to drive however and felt like it had plenty of power on tap when required. No compromise feels like it is being made here!

Ride & Handling Ride & Handling - 5 stars

This car feels like an extension of yourself such is the direct nature of the steering and handling! We drove the Special edition model which doesn’t have the low profile tyres of the S-line spec but is arguably better off for it as the ride is a little softer and more forgiving.

Build Quality & Reliability Build Quality & Reliability - 5 stars

As with all Audi vehicles the A3 Special Edition feels quality inside and out. You wouldn’t expect to have any major mechanical problems or issues and you most probably won’t. The A3 Sport-back special edition feels just as well built and solid as the more expensive vehicles in the Audi range.

Safety & Security Safety & Security - 4 stars

The vehicle we drove had remote central locking and alarm, whilst passengers and driver are protected by airbags all round. With an NCAP rating of four stars you really don’t have much to worry about when it comes to safety and security.

Space & Practicality Space & Practicality - 5 stars

Being the Sport-back option, the vehicle we tested was obviously more practical than its 3dr cousin with good space in the rear and a decent sized boot to work with. The driver and front passenger leg room is increased by the sloping dashboard which certainly gives the impression of space up front which belies the size of the car.

Ownership & Value Ownership & Value - 4 stars

The Audi A3 1.9 TDI Special Edition represents fantastic value for money be it as an outright purchase prospect or on a Contract Hire and leasing scheme. Residual values are excellent and contract hire rates of £199 per month + Vat have been known to be offered. This puts the A3 sport-back in direct competition with low to medium range Golf and Focus and thus represents amazing value as an entry into ownership of a distinctly classy motor vehicle. And remember due to the car’s ultra low emissions it means no Congestion charge and around £35 per year for Road tax!

IAIN SAYS

Performance Performance - 4 stars

The Audi A3 Sportback belongs in a family similar to the VW Golf but gives a much larger overall feeling of class and room. The A3 Sportback is a great looking car and the build quality is second to none; definitely living up to the Audi brand.

Ride & Handling Ride & Handling - 4 stars

The A3 Sportback always gives the impression of a solid car in control. Call me mad but I like to think that my car isn't going to spin horrendously off the road when I use it and the car certainly gives this confidence to the driver.

Build Quality & Reliability Build Quality & Reliability - 5 stars

Audi applies the same high standards of build to the A3 as it does to its more expensive models. It has a well crafted feel throughout, so the new car should have the same hardy cabin as the old model. Engines are a mix of new and tested units, and all should give years of dependable and trouble-free service.

Safety & Security Safety & Security - 5 stars

Thankfully no need to experience them first hand but the car is equipped with twin front, side and curtain airbags as standard. Generally the car has quality feel in its construction and certainly exudes the impression of safety. It also comes with remote central locking with deadlocks and alarm.

Space & Practicality Space & Practicality - 4 stars

As with most cars in this class those more generous in the height department may find that the leg room in the back isn't marvellous, but there's bags of room in the front, with all controls laid out in with particular attention to detail that's typical of all Audi models.

Ownership & Value Ownership & Value - 4 stars

The A3 Sportback is not the cheapest hatch on the market but certainly extremely good value for money for a car that will last for years and years whilst keeping its value well.

Peugeot 407 SW

Sport 2.2 HDi - The Peugeot 407 SW is one of the best looking estates on the road - with its angled rear and short overhang it has certainly left the boxy estate looking dated. But is it style with no substance? For the average 4.2 family the 407 SW should have what it takes as long as you don’t have any six footers to accommodate.... read more

Sport THP 150 - The Peugeot 308 SW may have set up a whole new niche in this sector. Not only has the car a big boot – it has seven seats, which means that this car has no direct rival in this sector. Peugeot 207 SW

1.6 - The 207 SW looks like a baby 407 SW but still manages to be spacious enough to be classed as a family car. The cabin is high quality and Peugeot's usual range of petrol and diesel engines are on offer. The diesels are disappointing when compared to the petrols. The drive is good but the 207 SW is rather expensive.... read more
