BMW X3 Full Road Test Report

BMW very rarely make mistakes but that is what has happened here. Not up to BMW’s usually high standards, the X3 performs more like a saloon than the compact SUV it purposes to be and the build quality is simply not good enough for a vehicle of this price. Budget BMW.... read more

BMW Z4 M Coupe 3.0si SE 2dr 2007

This is the second Z4 I’ve owned and I really didn’t see any reason to change when it’s such a practical everyday coupe that looks amazing and is very much value for money. I still get a buzz out of driving it and apart from a slightly stingy boot it has everything I need. Great little car not yet bettered in my opinion.

It’s been said by some, rather unkindly I think, that this is an ugly car. I prefer to see it as an unconventional beauty. The thing is with this car that once you’ve driven it you just want to get back in and drive it again. I’m trying to find excuses all the time to nip out in it, but the wife has told me there’s only so many pints of milk our fridge will hold. It’s one of those cars that gives you a real experience when you’re behind the wheel and as for power...it goes like the clappers!! First rate interior and comfort and a drive like no other made it very easy to choose this car over Aston Martin and Porsche. Perfect.

I love the iDrive system but I believe that it is not to everyone’s taste. Residuals are great on it. It is quality and limited supply is driving demand.

This is my company car and I’m glad because it is a fantastic car but it is very expensive and guzzles fuel. I love it and the drive is brilliant. Quality all round.

A near perfect car. Beautifully built and the finish on the interior is superb. The V8 engine is just a joy to hear every morning and makes the drive to work something to look forward to. Perfect driving position and the handling is so good the car practically drives itself. Not cheap to run but worth every penny. A very enjoyable car to drive.

The 1 series diesel is a real drivers car. When I first saw it, it looked a bit like a beached whale!!!...but the M sport variant looks superb. The boot and rear legroom are very restricted but the car makes up for it with supreme and effortless pulling power throughout the rev range. In addition, I averaged 57 mpg from Wales to Leicestershire!!!!!!! When I first bought it, my friend couldn’t tell it was a diesel till he opened the door....its that refined. Handling is sharp but lacks ’feel’ that my older ’95 Bmw had. The ride is hard but I would gladly compromise this for the safety of runflat tyres..( my dealer said you could drive 150 miles on punctured tyre!!!- hence no spare tyre). Its a great all rounder, being easy to park in town and cruising superbly on the motorways. Worth every (costly) penny!

What a great car especially on long journeys. Supremely smooth, powerful with great road presence and it’s fun to drive. Over 38mpg on long runs, 31 mpg overall with a lot of short journeys. Done over 14,000 miles in 18 months with 100% reliability record and no service bills. The shape could be better especially rear quarter and the dash is ugly. However the car is packed with technology including 10 air bags, bluetooth, voice controls etc. Highly recommended but do lease it as the depreciation will be huge!

Oh my God. Be very, very careful you like this on the test drive. I didn’t notice the faults in the 30 minute test drive I had, but after a few hours in the drivers seat, it is awfully painful to drive. I only got this because it’s the only diesel with an automatic box less than £30k. If you want a manual, get the Honda. The main problem is that suspension is just too hard (it was supposedly softened last year). Yes it’s sporty, but that’s not relaxing on long drives. Every bump goes straight through you and sends you bouncing up and down in your seat. Somehow, BMW’s engineers have managed to make this an instrument of torture by deciding not to pad the arm rests, so as each bump comes up from the road, you get smacked in the elbow (I am actually bruised!). Then there’s the door handle, which for no purpose whatsoever, goes all the way from the window to the floor, so no matter where you put your leg, it too smacks you about. Ouch. Ouch. Ouch. Ouch. I’ve leased this for 3 years (all my other cars were just 2), and I am regretting it already. Any chance to write this thing off and get a comfortable car instead will be taken! The stereo is awful, the doors need to be slammed (usually twice) to get them to close properly and the cruise control isn’t very smooth. On the plus side, there is room in the back seats and the brakes are excellent. Lastly, the official quoted fuel economy 43mpg. I drive like I’m on my way to a funeral, and yet I only get 34mpg. This is totally unaccaptable and deceitful - I got 10-20% better fuel economy than the official figures in my last 3 cars (all Mercedes), so why this should be 30% worse is beyond belief.

Fantastically stylish and beautifully built, this car will blow your mind once you are behind the wheel! Yes it’s a lot of money but I believe you get what you pay for and you really do get an awful lot, residuals are healthy as well so it’s an investment. Great drivers space and although I’ve seen reviews saying that visibility is impared I have to disagree, it really is just one of those things that you adapt to as every car is different. The only real down side is legroom in the rear seats, however, the boot space is massive so if you’ve got tall friends just bung them in there instead!

BMW M5 Touring 2007

The M5 Touring was a huge disappointment. The SMG gearbox was really clunky when used in everyday driving and meant that I could not get used to the car. I sold it after a few months. With a smooth gearbox the car could have been fantastic.
