Ford Kuga

i have had my ford Kuga for 6 weeks now and when my fuel tank is between 3/4 and full there`s a nasty thump. depending on the recoil of the car after braking it can be one thump or several, its becoming very irritating but i have been told by the garage who supplied it that it normal. is this correct? if so i`m in for quite a few noisy journeys.

Answers

Hi. Mine is doing this. It's the fuel in the tank sloshing around. It is quite loud though. Had my Kuga less than a week and noticed this today after filling her up. Stuart from Derbyshire

Hi. I have the same issue as you guys I have been to the dealers & Ford Warranty but they keep passing the buck. My Ford Kuga has only done 820 mls noticed this problem when I filled the tank for the first time had to put a couple of sheets in the boot the kill the noise. I wonder if you have been down the Warranty route? If you can give me anymore details this would be very helpful as I am not best pleased with this issue. Thanks Ian C. Ian from Falkirk

Every now and then when changing gear my clutch pedal clonks and goes loose. I take my foot off the pedal so it comes back up put my foot back on it and it is fine. This has happened four times so far. Any ideas what could be causing this?

Check that the circlip is holding the plunger on the clutch pedal. It's very common for the circlip to ping off allowing the plunger to become detached. Richie from Hertfordshire

Ford Kuga 2009

My Ford Kuga broke down with message given power steering malfunction. I took it into Ford and nothing was found. I got a new battery, had it home for 48 hours and it broke down again with the same message. I went back to Ford who put it on diagnostics and found a loose wire, tightened it up and I brought it home, but 17 hours later the car broke down with the same message. It`s still in the garage and they think it`s the cluster but are only seventy per cent sure. Any ideas?

Answers

I had this same problem on Monday 18th July!!! Power steering malfunction message appeared when we were about a mile from our holiday destination! The Kuga was only 2 weeks old and done less than 500 miles!! To say I was unhappy was an understatement!! Ford assist arranged for the AA to come out but they couldn't fix it at roadside as nothing was coming up on their computer. It was recovered to the local Ford garage and they replaced the power steering module unit.......we collected the car on the Friday and so far (touch wood) it appears to be working fine. I have read lots of posts on historically where people have had this same issues but its been on older models. Hope you manage to sort yours out soon!!! Rachel from Essex

I am afraid that this is portent of something much worse. I had the same message twice, booked it in to Ford and they (said they) did lots of tests and there was nothing wrong. 1 week later the same happened but this time switching off and on again didn't work. I just about managed to drive to the dealership where it is now "waiting for a new steering rack". Fortunately my car is still under warranty... Mike from Dorset

I have a 5month old titanium x awd which I acquired through Motability as I am disabled my vehicle has a steering wheel adaption which is a lollipop fitted on the right hand side of the steering wheel.my problem is that I have to use constant effort pushing up to keep the vehicle straight all the normal checks have been done the vehicle has only done 2250 MLS I was just interested if anybody had a problem like this i really like my Kuga but this steering issue is getting to me the vehicle has been back to the dealership but not resolved the Problem

Answers

Don't have an answer but do have a eight week old Kuga 1.5 Titanium x I am not happy with the steering , it seems to be all over the road ,takes over when you hit bumps , steers with the camber when braking. Took it back to Ford dealer ,they kept it for two days , used it as a pool car ,put 86 mile on the clock ,gave it me back and said they couldn't find a fault. The car is still the same and the wife wont drive it! If anybody has any other steering problems can they please put has Ford says they have no input from any other dealer! keith Norcliffe from West Yorkshire

not really an answer, but have you tried changing the steering responsiveness - in settings of steering wheel cluster....can change from sport to normal etc. This may help (at least until you resolve issue) andy from Kent

Hi Lee. I'm having a very similar problem. It started out as a wiper problem. As soon as I went above 25 mph the wipers would go constantly. I got an electric specialist to fix this but he had a lot of trouble getting it sorted then within a day the steering started playing up. It was making a strange noise then got hard to turn to the point it was very dangerous. The same guy tried sorting it and did so but if I was ever sitting idle for longer than five minutes it would start playing up again and now it has gone bad again to the point where it is dangerous again. By any chance did you find out what was causing your faults and how was it put right? Gary from County Tyrone Gary from County Tyrone

Ford S-Max

i am having the problem, front wipers not working and I have a message on the dash board stating " Alarm service required" after looking at the ford forums it seems this is common problem. When the Horn siren becomes damp this affects the wipers. I located the horn siren unit under the passenger wheel arch but I couldn't unplug the unit, I stuck my arm up there as I can get to it but it doesn't seem to pull out. I don't want to use pliers and risk damage. How does this unplug? Is it a simple pull out or are there lugs to undo, I cannot feel any lugs. My car is an s-max 59 plate. Appreciate any help. Thanks

Ford S-Max 2010

I lose the sound from my speakers in my Ford S-MAX except centre but at a low level, with a clicking type of sound and the words "drive fault " comes up on the Sony unit. Does anybody know what causes this to happen? Also under hard acceleration in 3/4 gears the engine seems to hesitate a little then pick up. It will keep doing it until you stop accelerating, it feels like a rocking type of motion. I hope things don’t come in 3’s. Any help will be great. (Titanium)

Answers

Hi matey, did you sort out CD player fault and was it a easy fix? Ben Moss from England

I have exactly the same problem displayed as "CD drive fault" with my S-Max from 2010. I also experience that to clear the fault, the car must be turned off and locked for several minutes and that a short power off/on cycle is not enough! I have noticed that the fault can be triggered by placing a mobile phone on the upper left speaker on the dashboard, so I suspect some kind of radio interference problem in the S-Max. It also appears more often on the high-way than in the city (maybe the mobile phone uses more power when far away from base stations?) Of course the error never appears at the Ford service center so they have so far not been able to solve this problem. Linus from Sweden

We have exactly the same issue. Has anyone got to the bottom of this yet? Hannah Swain from London

Ford now seem to have a software update, which solves this problem with S-Max and the sony audio. I visited Ford service a few weeks ago, they updated the sound system, and since then no CD drive fault! Linus Thrybom from Sweden

It’s pretty annoying we have the same problem with a 2010 Titanium x. Happens every other day and just comes out of the blue! Real shame as a great stereo. I’m going to get in touch with Ford as I can’t imagine our dealership will be much help; very friendly, but only interested in problems they see. Any suggestions would be appreciated :). If the car is switched off for more than 10 mins it usually corrects! Lee Bunn from England

same problem with my galaxy titanium stereo... i find holding the power button down until the display goes black, then switching it back on seems to reset it. Maybe be ok again for couple of hours, or couple of minutes then do it again. This is not a great solution but best i've come up with. Very annoying when your singing along.... then click click click. Ford main dealer wanted at least £90 depending on problem to fix it martin from Greater London

I had EXACTLY the same problem as described. I took it to the local main dealer where they advised that the issue was related to communication between the modules/components in the car. They upgraded the firmware of the modules and the problem was resolved. Phil from Staffordshire

Exactly the same problem as detailed. But my local dealership say there is no update and I need a new unit. Can anyone please tell me the dealership in Staffordshire or London who has resolved this so that I can contact them. Even contacted Ford who just supported the dealer's line and said I could go to another dealership. Infuriating. Dec from Surrey

Hi, I have this same problem. Did the Ford dealer charge to fix this update? If so, are you able to give an indication of the cost. Thanks Richard from North Yorkshire

At last some fellow Ford drivers with the same problem. I am selling my S-Max later this year and cannot sell it with this fault. My local Ford dealership said a new unit is £800(!) plus fitting costs. They suggested going onto Ebay and buying a second hand unit, which probably came from breaker`s yard right off Ford's with exact same stereo (cost circa £100 plus fitting costs). This I am wary of as it could be a whole load of expenditure and no fix. Phil from Staffordshire said they upgraded the firmware of modules and problem solved. Does this really fix it 100%? Simon Craig from Surrey

Hi Simon. I can confirm that I took my S-Max to the dealer and asked them to do an audio update. This fixed the problem. I left it with them for a few hours and they charged me £50 for the update. It was fixed about 4 months ago and I haven't seen the error since. I later found out that you can do the update yourself. Details on the link below. It may be risky though if it doesn't work so might be worth paying the dealer to do it. http://digiex.net/guides-reviews/guides-tutorials/14009-ford-audio-bluetooth-usb-firmware-update-november-2012-release-how-update.html Richard from North Yorkshire

Crawley Down Group updated the software and recalibrated for £28 plus they valeted the car - came back sparkling. This was after the unhelpful Lifestyle Ford at Manor Royal told me I needed a whole new unit and refused to take note of the online information I had on how to resolve it. Ford were pretty much the same treating social media as some kind of heresy to be ignored, rather than a way of sharing problems and finding answers. They suggested a second opinion as if I had some major medical condition. Anyway, won't be using Lifestyle ever again and would highly recommend Crawley Down Group for excellent service and not treating me like I was an idiot. Dec from Surrey

Richard from North Yorksire and Dec from Surrey, thank you so much for feed back. My local Ford garage were leaning towards new unit at £800!! Crawley Down Group I have used for other vehicles (vans) for work and have found them good in past. They are only a few miles from my business. Didn't know they did Fords. Thanks gents.. After reading all the very helpful comments here I took my 2010 S-Max Titanium to a Ford dealer today. They insist there is no update and I needed a new unit. I got them to fire up google and directed them here but they still insisted they know nothing of any audio update! New unit for around £800 was their advice. Not sure what else I can do! Anyone with this fault dig your heels in. I had to, even Ford customer care were unhelpful. The online answers were treated as some kind of heresy. It is a simple software update/ recalibration. It cost me £28 at Ford in Crawley Down not £800 for a new unit as the idiots at Lifestyle Ford in Crawley wanted to charge me. Sadly Crawley Down no longer has a Ford badge, but I think they can still service etc. Over a year later my stereo is still working fine. Dec from Surrey

Ford Fiesta

Having owned this car from new I know it fairly well. In 2015, after a very hot spell of weather I noticed that the speedometer was not only sticking but over reading. This was followed by the internal indicator dashboard lights failing intermittently. Ford replaced this unit for GP 260.00 Now in 2017 the first reasonably warm day has resulted in the speedometer needle sticking under acceleration and then under-reading. Stopping and turning the ignition off then on resets the needle but only until the next hot spell. The fact that the car interior naturally gets very hot on sunny days is the only think I can think of to link the two events. Does anyone know if this is a common problem with the dashboard cluster unit, are Ford aware of it and of any easy and permanent fix? Thanks for any advice. Paul C.

Answers

Have never heard of this before and can only be a issue with the instrument cluster. Your Ford dealer can try a software update on the cluster first (if available) to try and fix, if there is not one or it does not fix it will be a new cluster John westwood from Essex

Hi there, I am a proud owner of nice ST grey fiesta flame 54 plate. the car drives fantastically, after my mechanic MOT'd the car, i went to his garage to collect my key, i noticed the engine management light was on. the next day when i went to collect the car, i discovered why the light was on. for some reason my speedometer works upto 20mph then the needle drops to 0mph and my mileage appears as '------' after doing some research online, the fiesta is common with this and ford owners forums suggest the VSS sensor, i am just wondering where is the VSS sensor locator under my bonnet? or is there anything else i should check? Thank you

Answers

The VSS is the vehicle speed sensor and is located in the gearbox at the top under the bonnet. Is held in with a clip and pin and has to be removed and the sensor then pulled out of gearbox. (It can be a a bit of a pain to change) John westwood from Essex

I have had the stop/start battery replaced on my KA but it still doesn't work? All requirements are met so I do not understand why it is not working. My bluetooth also disconnects after 20 seconds

Answers

Hi, as long as you have the correct battery fitted (EHF enhanced flooded battery) for start/ stop you need to reset the battery monitor sensor to tell it a new battery has been fitted and unable it to work again. If is a KA2 you will need to disconnect the battery monitor sensor which is a multi plug found on the battery earth lead under bonnet and run the car on idle for approx 10 mins, re connect it and the process is complete and should start to work again. Whilst driving my Ford Fiesta down the dual carriageway, the airbag light came on and the car lost all power and electrics to the dashboard. After a couple minutes the car was able to be restarted. I`m interested to know if anyone else has had this fault? I have just spoke to my local Ford garage where I brought the car from (11 Reg) and have been told that due to the short time period of the fault, a fault code may not be stored on the vehicle`s computer and that I may have to pay for this to be checked out. Not the best after-market service, especially as this is a serious safety fault with the vehicle and it is still under warranty. Any ideas? (Zetec)

Answers

My car (a 60 plate fiesta) did this today too. All of a sudden the inside lights and radio went off and the airbag light came on. When I tried to pull over my steering had locked too. After I stopped i turned it off then on twice. The first time everything seemed fine the only message was low engine oil and the second time even that had gone and I managed to get home fine... Would love to know why this happened but I'm glad it wasn't just my car and other fiestas have experienced this. Emma from Lincolnshire

My Ford Puma shakes a lot when I put my foot down. ,I’ve had my balancing done and tracking. Someone said it could be my driveshaft but my car drives fine and does not make any noise. Any suggestions on what it could be?

Answers

I believe the culprit may be drive shaft(s). Under load from the off it is more noticeable. They are easy to replace. Puma Cup from East Sussex

My Millenium Ford Puma kept losing water so I have had the water pump replaced and the cam belt. It was running fine for a day but has now started losing water again. I fill it up and it`s fine when driving, but as soon as I stop and turn the car off it dumps all of the water. Does anyone have any idea what else could be wrong? (Millenium)

Answers

Where does the water come from when it leaks. Sounds it maybe a head gasket fault or maybe a split hose. Also check the Heater Control Valve as they are prone to crack the black plastic pipes on the unit. Puma Cup from East Sussex

Heater control valve is notorious on Puma. I have had a couple fail. Recently though, I found the fault to be the potentiometer (heater control switch electrical connector) to be faulty. Replacement and worked fine. Puma Cup from East Sussex

I have an intermittent electrical fault that means my boot and sun roof won't always close. The boot makes the beeping noise like it's closing but won't close and the sun roof goes to close and then flies back open. Ford have had it 5 times and said as it's an intermittent fault they can't do anything. It has now escalated as the Sat Nav, Radio, USB Charging points and display system froze. It then came up saying System Maintenance after about 30 minutes. Ford have had it 5 times now and told me they don't know what to do. The car is only 7 months old now and is a Kuga Titanium X, has anyone else had this problem

Answers

I am having the same problem with the electric tailgate it opened ok with all devices and when you kick under the bumper, however it will not close electronically. Ford have never heard of the problem and for £118.00 + vat they will have a look, and replace anything at fault at an extra charge. This happened just after its third service and 3 days after the warranty expired. Not very happy Car is also a titanium x sport Ron Ron barclay from Aberdeenshire

There is no silver bullet answer for this but suggest you visit the Kuga owners club forum for advice. Hugh from City of Glasgow

I have a orange star which is displayed on the dashboard panel which stays on whether the weather is warm or cold should this light go out when the weather is warm , Thank you Liz .

Answers

The orange star you refer to is actually a snowflake symbol. It comes on as an orange light when the temp is 4 deg C but once the temp gets to 0 deg C it turns red. and turns on the heated screens when you switch on at first. The sensor is located in the door mirror, supposedly the L/H door mirror for the UK but wiring diagrams seem to differ for the L/H drive and the R/H drive. It should not illuminate above 4 deg C but it will be costly to replace since it comes as part of the door mirror. Hugh from City of Glasgow

Clicking noise usually means the starter solenoid is chattering because the battery doesn't have enough power to hold it engaged. First thing to do is to check your battery. Hugh from City of Glasgow

hi ive a Ford Mondeo 2010 estate i got engine malfunction light up took it to garage for diagnostic came up DPF blockage so garage reconditioned DPF and we put new map sensor on too , it ran great for 50 miles or so then engine malfunction appeared again took it back to diagnostics and same code appeared soot / DPF the mechanic said its got him beat because he knows the DPF is clear and the car runs brilliant any ideas on what else could be problem and is there a service reminder code on fords kind regards kev

Answers

Did the mechanic code the new DPF into the ECU? He has to do this under the cars diagnostic system and it should really have been done before the car was driven otherwise you can waste the new DPF. Hugh from City of Glasgow

When reversing my Fiesta at very low speed the car stalls and a loud bang sounds. The vehicle stalls and sticks in reverse gear. To get the vehicle out of reverse I have to re-press the clutch and force it back into neutral. If I then restart the vehicle and drive as normal it`s ok. I'm worried this may turn into something serious? Many Thanks Jason
