Answers

You need to get your vehicle scanned for digital trouble codes (DTC). AN example would be U0416-68 which breaks down as follows: U0416 = Invalid Data Received From Vehicle Dynamics Control Module. 68 = DTC Failure Subtype definition for failure category “6”. 68 = DTC Failure. Subtype definition for failure category "6". Event information: This subtype is used by the control module to indicate the detection of a system event that was not caused by the control module itself but forces the control module to store DTC from another system or control module. Bottom line is that you could have a faulty ABS sensor and/or a faulty brake light switch. There may also be other DTC's present. Hugh from City of Glasgow

Ford Ka

My temperature light on my ka keeps coming on. When I first start the car it will run for a while and the temp light comes on after about 10 miles when running at 50 mph, if I slow down to 30 after a while the temp light goes out I then increase to 40/50 and after a while it comes back on I slow down it goes out etc etc. Car starts perfectly, there is no coolant leak from the vehicle, the radiator gets hot and the rad fan pulls in, the heater in the car is working very well (hot) and it does not heat up to the point of steaming. so appears to be running normally except for this fault. Can someone throw some light on this fault for me. Thanks in advance

Answers

The ecu controls everything in this car, making fault finding tricky. Start by checking the coolant temperature sender. Next check the fan relay, which can fail in a number of ways. The only other thing I can think of is to check you don't have an airlock at the top of the coolant system, which under certain circumstances can leave the coolant sensor in steam, rather than water. Hope this helps? Paul from Cambridgeshire

Recently bought a ka and after about a week the engine light came on had it checked and had a leak from the thermostat housing and got it changed. Now the light stays on very dim when the car is unlocked and started and stays on dim when running. also when i put the front fog lights on the frost light comes on too? Which i didnt notice before. Any ideas as i had the AA out and said all seems good on the computer and so did the garage after fitting the thermostat housing. Could the leak from the housing caused a problem with the electrics?

Answers

This is a classic earth fault, commonly seen when tail lights flash when indicating. Return current is finding it's way back through other routes. Check the various electrical earth points for corrosion, and then check the inline harness connectors, as these can sometimes corrode. Paul from Cambridgeshire

Hello, very strange thing happened this evening, daughter was demisting the windows so turned up the heater to max and the instrument panel ights went out, all indicator lights are working just cannot see the dials, the lights on warning alarm works as does the left handside side lamp so know it isn't the fuse, we have just recently changed the stero, but the panel light was working when she first started the car.

Answers

The dials are illuminated by just one bulb mounted in the top of the pod. It's entirely possible that it failed at the exact moment the heater switch was used, through co-incidence and not as a result of anything else. You can change these bulbs for LED's if you want to customise the colour of the dials! Hope this helps? Paul from Cambridgeshire

Answer this question

Talha, England

Ford Galaxy 2005

Hi, I have a problem with my Ford Galaxy where my heater control panel seems to have stopped working. Apart from the fan control on the control panel nothing seems to work, I can’t get my ac on nor the rear heater switch to work and I can’t change the heat setiing either. The lights on the panel do not light up either. Funnily somehow the analogue clock is also connected as this has stopped working at the same time as the heating controls did. This fault at first was intermittent and you would see the lights flashing and also the rear heater if on would intermittently switch on and off, but now the fault has become permanent. Any help will be much appreciated. Any ideas? Regards. (1.9 tdi 115bhp)

Answer this question

Noel Quinsey, Australia

Ford Kuga

There are two questions, maybe related 1. After driving for a short period a soft 'woomp woomp woomp' sound at the rate of about one 'woomp' per second comes from the engine and continues when you stop and idle. Switch off the engine and the noise stops. 2. When you stop the car there is a metallic 'ping ping ping' noise from the direction of the exhaust similar to the sound of a metal roof cooling. There is also a smell of something very hot. Are you able to help on these questions please? Thank you (Mr) Noel Quinsey 15 July 2016

Answers

Hello you have described the exact problem I have noticed today, any idea what it could be? Mary from Surrey

I can explain second noise only. When the engine stops, the exhaust system will rapidly cool, contracting in the process, and depending on the various joints in the system, will make 'tink' noises, rapidly at first, but slowing till they stop. Perfectly normal, but a strong burning smell needs to be checked out! Paul from Cambridgeshire

Ford Ka 2009

Hi, I have a problem with my Ford Ka. Whenever there’s heavy rain or I wash the car the passenger footwell becomes sodden. I have had it looked at twice and was told on the first occasion that the drain hole was blocked. My Ka still leaked so I went back to the same mechanic who did a water test etc. he then thought it was the door seal and did the necessary work. A week later, after a night of heavy rain, the footwell was sodden again. The mechanic and myself are at a loss with this. The car is parked at night on my drive which is on a slope, could this be affecting the leak? Does anyone have any ideas? This is seriously driving me nuts and any help will be greatly appreciated!

Answers

Park it on a slope the other way (i.e. reverse on if you normally drive it on forwards) and see if it still happens. Dangerous Dave from Nottinghamshire

Open the bonnet and remove the plastic trim, which goes between the base of the screen and the rear of the bonnet. Get some silicone sealant and seal where there is a visual leak Dangerous Dave from Nottinghamshire

Hi Rebecca, just had this exact same problem on my 09 ka! By trade I’m an auto electrician on HGV’s, so water leaks really aren’t my area. Stripped the interior to find what I knew to be an entry point. As far as finding how it was getting in, no luck! I managed to get a post warranty claim from Ford UK. It turns out this is a well known issue on all early new shape KA’s. The water gets in through a bad patch in the seam sealant, on the rear crash membrane. The rear bumper needs to be removed, along with the interior, which isn’t actually difficult to do at all. The bumper, I’d leave to someone else! The seam sealant will need to be removed and new, re-applied! All in all I paid £280 and have received a free service and MoT as a part of goodwill. Definitely worth investigating, before paying their original request of £890! Hope this helps you out! Any further questions, don’t hesitate to contact me! Jack Hadfield from England

Under the bonnet, remove the two rubber 'plugs' on the apron below the wipers. The channel fills up with debris and the drain holes which lead to the wheel arches block up. Remove the debris, poke a wire down the drain holes to clear them, and do not replace the two 'plugs' so that rain water can drain out easily. That solved my problem anyway. dave from East Sussex

Answer this question

Julie Edwards, England

Ford Focus 2005

The battery on my Ford Focus was low. I tried to start it and it attempted to turn the engine over but on the third attempt it was completely flat, so I tried to jump start it but when I turned the ignition key in my car the engine wouldn`t do anything, no noise at all. The immobiliser light comes on and then continuously flashes about 70 times. The remote key fob is operating the doors but it won`t start the car. I called the AA out and they said that they couldn’t get my car to ’talk’ to their machine so suggested taking it to Ford. As I don`t want to be landed with the usual huge bill I decided against this. Does anyone have any ideas what the problem could be and can I fix it myself? Thanks.
