Matthew, Surrey

Ford S-Max

I was driving my 2007 Ford S-Max Titanium 2.0 TDCi at 70 mph on the motorway, in normal weather conditions, when the ESP light and the warning triangle light came on, and the car started to lose power. I stopped on the hard shoulder, switched off, started the engine again and the lights had disappeared but, after 2 miles, the same thing happened. However, the car was normal on the 100-mile journey to get back home. The Ford garage checked the car but could find no cause. Do you have any ideas as to why this happened, please?

Hi Matthew, I have also had this problem and I have been to Ford dealers the length of the country with no luck. My wife used to use the car for just city driving until I had a job up north. Once I gave this a good run on the motorway, 300 miles plus, I have never had this issue since, fingers crossed it has sorted out the problem. John Kirkham from Bath and North East Somerset

My wife's car seems to have an intermittent starting fault. It's a 2007 model with approx 90000 miles FSH and due it's next service in a couple of weeks. On a number of occasions she has driven the car to town only to find when she returns to the car and try's to start it again it fails. On one occasion she called me to it and I couldn't start it either was turning over fine but not firing. I left it a while and phoned to get it recovered I then tried it one more time whilst waiting for RAC after about 20 mins and it then started. No warning lights flash up and temp whilst driving is normal. No issues when driving and car is used daily with fault happening about 8 times now. The fault has only happened shortly after car is driven she states that it always starts again if she then leaves it 20-30 mins . We have taken it to a local garage but they said as the car starts fine with no fault codes then they can't fix it until it develops the fault again. The car will be going for a service end of this month I am hoping someone may have come across a similar fault before so I can pass info on to garage when it goes in so we can get it sorted. Any info appreciated.

Nikki Robb, Scotland

Ford Ka 2006

My heaters in my Ford Ka have been blowing out hot air for months now and, having taken it to 2 garages who told me I was imagining it, I thought nothing of it. Then I googled the problem and found out it`s a common fault with the Ford Ka and that the heating will be on full lock on hot and will apparently only cost £36 to fix which is fine. However this overheating has caused another problem in the car - all the electrics (apart from windows and lights) have gone, so no back window heater etc and the A/C says it`s on all of the time, (obviously it`s using lots of petrol and water), but the hot air is still blowing out. Any idea how to get this fixed or roughly how much it will be? I don`t want to get the mickey taken out of me again, since I knew there was a problem ages ago and this other problem wouldn`t have happened if they believed me then! Thanks.

Answers

I have exactly the same problem happen to my KA ’06. I am now having to pay £65 to get my dash board lights fixed even though my mechanic told me they fixed my heating problem, which cost me £65 then as well. Now I know there is a link and the same garage is fixing my electronics; I think I’m going to point it out when I go down there next. Sorry I couldn’t help you with your problem, I just thought to let you know you’re not the only one. Beth from Caerphilly

I had the same issue, there is a mechanism behind the dash that is accessible from out side under the window. This is a common fault on certain models and year. Since I had it changed ive had no issue. Regarding lights etc, the dashboard light is easy to mend, but you have to take the stereo ot first, then unscrew two crews holding part of the dash facia on. Then where the perspec screen is (speedo etc) two screws hold the dash in place there. I had this issue, cleaned and change the bulb and no issues. Jason from West Yorkshire

Hi, I have a similar problem, whereas the heater works fine for a while, blowing hot and cold when you turn the dial, but every now and then, it goes straight to hot even when on cold, and does not change. but the next day, the problem has gone. now the heater valve was changed last week, and the coolant was also changed last week. so am i missing something here, or is it the dial itself that could be the problem Michael from Middlesex

Ford Ka

Hi, For a few months now my Ka seems to be overheating. When I drive mark for a short distance , when I park up I noticed a bubbling noise coming from under the bonnet so when I opened the bonnet it smells of burning and there's a black fluid around the casket. But I have googled it and it seems like a common fault. I have had the head casket and thermostat replaced at Ford themselves and was fine for a few weeks but has came back but it wasn't a problem before taking it to them. I don't drive with the heating on as I don't want to overheat the engine as I had once learned my lesson with that.. But the heater is blowing out cold air when I drive I'm not sure if that's a clue or not? I check my oil and water once a week, but the water doesn't seem to be going down just sits below the max bar I have out a cap of anti freeze inside .I dont want the engine to blow as I only have 60,000 miles on the clock. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Answers

I had the identical problem, needle in red zone but engine at normal temperature. First garage didn't have a clue except to change thermostat and flush the system. Second garage recognised fault straight away it was a faulty temperature sender unit. he tested it first by disconnecting the wire and earthing it out (which made the temp gauge needle move). Seemingly there are two items that need to be changed sender and sensor units I think) but it was a quick fix and relatively cheap. Terence brown from Cambridgeshire

I lose the sound from my speakers in my Ford S-MAX except centre but at a low level, with a clicking type of sound and the words "drive fault " comes up on the Sony unit. Does anybody know what causes this to happen? Also under hard acceleration in 3/4 gears the engine seems to hesitate a little then pick up. Hi matey, did you sort out CD player fault and was it a easy fix? Ben Moss from England

I have exactly the same problem displayed as "CD drive fault" with my S-Max from 2010. I also experience that to clear the fault, the car must be turned off and locked for several minutes and that a short power off/on cycle is not enough! I have noticed that the fault can be triggered by placing a mobile phone on the upper left speaker on the dashboard, so I suspect some kind of radio interference problem in the S-Max. It also appears more often on the high-way than in the city (maybe the mobile phone uses more power when far away from base stations?) Of course the error never appears at the Ford service center so they have so far not been able to solve this problem. Linus from Sweden

We have exactly the same issue. Has anyone got to the bottom of this yet? Hannah Swain from London

Ford now seem to have a software update, which solves this problem with S-Max and the sony audio. I visited Ford service a few weeks ago, they updated the sound system, and since then no CD drive fault! Linus Thrybom from Sweden

If the car is switched off for more than 10 mins it usually corrects! Lee Bunn from England

same problem with my galaxy titanium stereo... i find holding the power button down until the display goes black, then switching it back on seems to reset it. I had EXACTLY the same problem as described. I took it to the local main dealer where they advised that the issue was related to communication between the modules/components in the car. They upgraded the firmware of the modules and the problem was resolved. Phil from Staffordshire

2007 Ford Fiesta 3dr Trend 1.6 TDCi - car wouldn't start after diesel pump was replaced, diagnosed as compression issue, head was re-conditioned. The issue now is with the head bolts. The engineer who worked on the head recommended that new head bolts are purchased as the head had been skimmed and the current ones might be too long. Discrepancies in information from spares shops and Ford dealers about correct length. Current 147.5mm but nobody seems to have that length in documentation. Block was replaced a few years ago after engine ceased, can't get any history on changes. I need to find out what the correct length is, where to get the bolts and also the torque settings which nobody can agree on either. Thank you.

Answers

Hi there Morne... As far as the length of the bolts being too long, that a whole lot of rubbish. I'm a 04 model 1.6i 16v 3door trend fiest owner. I redid my cylinder head and block myself. If the head was machined, there is absolutely no way the bolts can be to long. Common sense would tell you, if the bolts are to long it means the head isn't sucure on the block which would cause a severe amount of oil all over the block. I recommend you have a look at your exhaust valves. (Compression loss) I hope I've helped. Regards Brett S.A Durban Brett from South Africa

My Ford Ka is starting to overheat. I drove it 15 minutes up the road yesterday and had to pull over after noticing steam coming from under the bonnet. I lifted the bonnet and found my water boiling. I checked my oil but that was fine. There are no visible leaks from the car, however the garage have said I hardly had any water. I checked the water level at the start of the week and it was full and my heaters are blowing hot and cold air when needed. All the pipes surrounding the water tank are hot. I`ve taken it to two different garages, one said it was my water pump, one said it was either my radiator or thermostat. Can anyone please help me with this? I don't want to be taken for a ride and have a whole new water pump/radiator installed if it`s just a case of a new thermostat. Any help would be much appreciated, thank you.

I am very confused about mine. It's got 45,000 on the clock and the garage told me to part ex if I could and get rid before it blows? karen from Yorkshire

Ford Ka 2001

I’ve got a 2001 Ford Ka and need to change the HT leads. I’ve been told by a few people that they have to be changed in a certain order but none of them seem to know the order. So I was wondering, do they have to be changed in a certain order and if so in what order? Thanks.

Answers

By certain order they mean replace each lead one at a time, rather than pull them all off. Take one lead, remove it from the distributer cap at one end, then the spark plug at the other. Then put the new lead in it’s place. Then do the next lead etc. Dangerous Dave from Nottinghamshire

You can change the leads in any order, but do one at at time so as not to mix them up! Colin from England

Your cylinder fire order is 1.3.4.2....that`s from left to right...on top of the coil pack is the plug lead number..just follow the course. Graham from Kent
