My fan only works on 4 and the front demister isnt working , any ideas why ?

Answers

The fan issue sounds like the fan speed regulator or rheostat may be faulty or loose/poor connection to it. The demister issue may be a fuse or may be connected to the rheostat issue R Evans from Caerphilly

My fan heater is only working on number 4 any help please

Answers

If your heater sustem is otherwise working fine.. i.e. hot and cold, but your blower will only respond to OFf and Full blast then you probably have a defective speed control resistor... or the connector plug to is is deteriorated. Many people have this issue and change the whole of the blower at great expense and a lot of work, when a resistor is always much cheaper and nearly always easier tto fit. Had this prob with my Citroen Relay and removed the resistor.. found the multiplug to it had one defective connection.. removed, cleaned and reattached connections and it now works fine.. turns out my resistor was good anyway.. cost.. Michelle, just take them out one at a time until you find the broken one.. start with the red ones .. more likely to be 10amp fuse.... if it is the fuse. It could be the switch at the pedal. Also have a look inside the fuse box cover.. there may be a guide their to help. R Evans from Caerphilly

Hello Peter I had the very same thing. I took it into Ford and it was found to have a seal missing near the boot. They ended up having my car for a week they had to take all the carpets out and dry them and had lots of resealing done on the car all round I would check and see if you have any water sitting in where we keep the spare tyre. as that is where when it rained water sat. As soon as I drove the car the water made its way throughout the car. Hope you find this helpful. Barbie Parfitt from Kent

Linda Warren, Hertfordshire

Ford Mondeo

Heater hose blew off, steam coming from under bonnet , car did not overheat, (thermostat is ok) been advised to have water pump checked, although computer showed no sign of trouble with the water pump...are there any other symptoms which would tell me what caused this please... many thanks...

Answers

Linda, there could be a blockage somewhere but there could also be a problem with the water pump.. thing is.. garages say "didn't show up on the diagnostics"... well.. a water pump is mechanical and a fault in it won't necessarily show up on electronic diagnostics... there has been a tendency lately for people to consider the computer diagnostics as the dogs thingies.. and it can be.. in the right situation. You may still have issue with water pump. However, pressure building up high enough in cooling system to blow a hose potentially could be a sign of head gasket failure.. the high pressures built up in cylinders leaking into the cooling channels which are very close by. Rachel, it sounds like the bearings in the fan may have gone. with the engine off.. try manually turning the fan blade around and see how much resistance there is.. if it grinds and/or shows resistance to turning then that's it. Flat Battery . Needs recharging or jump leads.... bruck morton from Suffolk

Bruck thinks you have a flat battery.. (maybe defective) symptoms are consistent with that, but could also be loose connection somewhere.. test the battery voltage before doing anything else.. with all in OFF position it should be around 12.4 at the terminals, but over 12v. (If under 12v then you should change the battery) If already over 12v, try jumping it and if it works and gets the engine running, test the voltage across the battery with it running in order to test alternator output.. should be around 13.5-14v.. if it IS, then alternator is fine and battery defective. A discharged battery can be recharged and work fine for a while.. but if it is defective it is not likely to retain charge and will go kaput sooner or later.. do you want to risk being in the middle of nowhere and that happen? If your battery and alternator testing all come up fine then it could be connections to the starter motor or more likely the starter motor itself. R Evans from Caerphilly

my 2006 ford focus 1800 sport has been intermittingly draining the battery. I do not use the car a lot but when it has been driven for aaprox 20 miles then parked overnight it turns over once and then the battery is completely flat. I tend to use the car approx. 4 times a week for about 10 to 20 miles each time. The battery was changed a year ago for the same reason. I recently got the reversing sensors and reversing sensors fixed with a new bulb and switch in the engine for the sensors . the car was parked for 2 weeks and started first time. This lasted for about a week and then started to drain again. I took the car to an auto spark who said he would look at the vehicle but it could end up taking about 3 weeks to find the fault. He could not give me any idea of what it would cost. If the vehicle was tested on a diagnostic machine would that identify the problem. Please advise me what to try next.

It may also happen, that the battery does not get enough time or miles to charge enough. Cold, wet weather, short distances, rarely in use, electric gadget in the car, they use electricity also when parked, etc. all together. And then the battery easily gets empty within some time. You've used time and tried ti fix it already so... don' t know if this is silly to suggest this in your case, Anyway there are also much quality issues in different batteries. Some are very durable some not. Have you tried this simple thing? Detach the negative (black) battery cable every time when you leave your car in park for a few days and check this way does it loose its power. It takes a bit work and patience, but its also cheap way to check the battery's electricity loss. Also of course you have to reset some things like the cloc etc. again... but you do it only once after 2 weeks or so when you're sure that its not the battery alone which is the issue right now. -My husband would probably rather buy the fault finder (lol), but if you want you can try. Hi,when I first start my car in the morning,it struggles to start and thick white smoke comes out of the exhaust.once I have revved the car it's ok,runs fine and had more problems.do I have a serious problem?

Answers

Many vehicles throw out white smoke on first starting.. and your perception of THICK WHITE SMOKE may not be the same as someone else's.. in other words, it may appear to be a lot to you, but may be perfectly normal. One indicator that it may just be normal is that you say when you rev.. it goes. Have you checked the coolant level? Excessive white smoke can be indicator that coolant is getting into cylinders.. and over time you'd see the coolant level dropping significantly (some vehicles do seem to lose coolant with no obvious leaks). At the moment from the way you present your question, I'd not be too concerned about the white smoke unless you are losing a lot of coolant as well. The struggling to start may need a look at.. but it could be something simple like a service needed, battery may need changing, connections to starter may need a clean.. What you could try for a quick test is putting fuel additive in the tank as per instructions on bottle.. it may be that the fuel delivery system could do with a bit of flush. R Evans from Caerphilly

Answers

20W50 was the standard oil that was put into cast iron engines of days gone by. Modern engines require a more refined oil and your should be no different.. and a little Google research shows that your Ka should have had 5W40.. fully or semi synthetic. Oil that is too thick could be clogging the galleries and oil distribution channels... in particular the narrow passageways in hydraulic lifters. get it changed. R Evans from Caerphilly

I have a ford mondeo 2.0 tdci . it has done 83000 miles .it is a 2004 model . Running well except when the engine has warmed up and I stress not before when the accelerator pedal is first applied only slightly the engine pulls back (coughs would poss describe it ) and when more throttle is applied she accelerates as normal . I have fully serviced the car and changed the egr valve with no improvement .apart from this the car is running very well . Can you help please.

Answers

You say that you've changed the egr valve.. have you told the ECU that you've got a new egr?.. In several cases the ecu will need to be told that there is a new component.. egr valve, turbo, high pressure fuel pump are to name a few.. the ecu will need to learn how to communicate with the egr and understand the output messages from the egr so it can make its correct adjustments to fuel supply. The issue might also be related to turbo lag. R Evans from Caerphilly

Hi R Evans thanks for your reply makes sense but my ear valve is one with no electrical sender or connection so how in this case does the ecu communicate with the erg do I still have to tell the ecu and if I do how ? Thanks Richard Stephens from Pembrokeshire

When I release the brake pedal on my brand new 65 plate KA I hear a clunk under the passenger side of the car. Brakes are working fine and the clunk is reduced (sometimes to zero) if I carefully release the brake very slowly but my normal braking actions always result in a clunk on releasing the brake. Is this clunking common to all new KAs and can it be eliminated as it is annoying to listen to.

Very interesting comments, Lorraine. I wrote to Andy Barratt, MD of Ford, and the response was that EVERY new Ka has a clunk (the OPPOSITE of what the Tech Specialist told you) and this is a characteristic of the car's design which is perfectly safe and does not warrant any rectification. My comments that, notwithstanding no new car should have any clunks, the clunk breaks the driver's concentration and so is a potential safety hazard and also that the clunk may well mask another clunk that signifies a real brake problem and so is another potential safety hazard were not considered valid by Ford. My local dealer where I got the car in West Lothian was concerned enough to raise a Global Concern Report to Ford about the clunk but then followed the Ford party line and said they would only eliminate the clunk if Ford so directed. I am currently awaiting a response from Motor Codes (check out their website) about this problem and will keep you posted. We must continue to pursue this especially when we have had differing responses from Ford about the clunk and it may be useful to compare notes offline. B McKee from West Lothian

Answers

In front of your Battery there is a small fusebox. And in that box is several wires. The top black wire which goes to the alternator has a tendancy to burn out and arc, causing the non starting problem, I went down to halfords and bought a new ring terminal and cut back the wire, attached the new terminal to the wire, I also used carb cleaner and a wire brush to clean up the metal contacts in the fusebox where the cable bolts on to, as well as rubbing general purpose grease in where the wire bolts to as my wire had melted the fusebox slightly and caused a small crack, the grease is acting as a barrier. I put it all back together, and so far 3rd running, The starting problem has gone completely for now. Here is some pictures; (PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS AN UNKNOWN COMMON FAULT ON MK2 GALAXY'S for both the Petrol and Diesel models!) Mj from Switzerland

I can only get hot air even when the fan is turned to cold. Also, there is a clicking noise under the dashboard on the drivers side. Would the two be connected? I would be grateful of any advice. Thanks

Yep - sounds like the HCV. However don't buy a cheap and cheerful one - buy the Ford only one (£50) and they work perfectly. Ash from Kent

We have had problems starting car so changed glow plugs and got a new battery now when you turn key all central locking windows and lights and dash work but car won't turn over you get nothing what could be wrong

Answers

rather unusual and a little unlikely.. but still possible.. that when the battery was changed it could have caused a short and blown one of the engine control fuses at the battery.. many vehicles (not sure if the Galaxy is one) have a number of fusible lines coming straight off the battery. I know my van has four or five... and one feeds power to the starting system. Worth checking. R Evans from Caerphilly

My Ignition warning light is staying on, aill this affect the cooling sysfem

Answers

The ignition warning light is intended to indicate a fault in the charging, the battery or the electrical system. It should not affect the cooling system.. that said, the cooling system has a number of electrical components to warn the driver of cooling issues.. so while it is not likely the ignition light will affect the cooling itself.. it might give erratic indications to the driver. When I turn my Ford Fiesta`s radio on there`s a clicking noise but it does stop and play I find after about 20 seconds. Does anyone know what I can do to fix it please?

Answers

I have a 2014 Fiesta and it just started doing that as well. I didn't realize it was the radio so that's pretty strange too, sounds like someone is taking a ring and wrapping it on the window to get my attention, which is what I thought it was when it first started happening. Did you ever find out how to resolve the problem? K Curtis from United States of America

Unfortunately I don't have the answer to this, and as it's an old thread you probably have your problem sorted. I have the exact same issue on my focus. Tried starting yesterday, no luck. Ignition comes on, but not even firing. Very similar to your problem. Can I ask what you did with the car to get it fixed? Thanks Faisal Faisal Gondal from Yorkshire

Other half has some kind of ghost electrical problem with HIS car. For no known reason car will unlock, windows go down, alarm goes off, radio goes on, wipers wipe and headlights flash. I know the usual answer is he has pressed the key fob. But can you please tell me how this can be the case when he is over 20 miles away with both key fobs.

Ford Ka 2011

When the temperature drops below -2 my Ford Ka`s gearbox freezes and I can`t get the gearstick to move. It ’unfreezes’ after 20 minutes of the engine running, but the gears are stiff for at least 20 minutes of driving following ’defrosting’. The dealership say they have never heard of this and are unable to address it because the temperature on the forecourt doesn’t seem to drop below -2 when I leave it overnight with them. Any suggestions?

Answers

I have a 09 plate ka and a couple of years ago my heater dial stopped lighting up. I asked my local mechanic about it and he said that the bulb had probably broken and that it is a long job to replace because it means taking the dashboard out to replace the bulb.
