Audi A6 Avant 2.0 tdi 2010

4 star review

Here’s my take after a week with a brand new one and in direct comparison with a Subaru Legacy 3.0 spec B tourer. The Audi is overall a really comforting experience in that you feel that you have made a good decision buying/leasing one... until you get past the overwhelming feelgood factor that the interior and build quality provides. Because, while everything is bolted together well, there always seems to be a counter issue to each good facet. For instance, it cruises well and seems relaxed, apart from the fidgeting suspension and apparent road noise, it seems quick apart from the sluggish off the line take up that leaves you guessing when exiting roundabouts. The S line seats are difficult to configure and I base that comment on getting comfortable in my Subaru Legacy seats over many miles, but failing to lose the ’sitting on, not in" feel the S line seats provide. Overall I think the A6, at least this generation, is a big, smart polished PR exercise that impresses ignorant neighbours more than it pleases the owner. Where it might be solid, assured and prominent, it’s also, hefty, cumbersome and lacking finesse. Oh, I mentioned my day to day car, a Subaru 3.0 Spec B Tourer. It’s (just) less well built, not quite the same in terms of interior quality, blah blah, but hang on... four years in it’s still solid, fast (always, no sluggish off the line nonesense) and far, far, far more alive in response in every way. Corners, check, wet roundabouts, well, check, overtaking, yes... so you guessed that. But, over four years, it’s had a problematic battery (replaced by the dealer, no question) and that’s it. I think the Audi might be my aunt: Likeable, there, trustworthy, hard to dislike, but not really adding anything.

Audi A6 Avant Tiptronic 7 speed auto 2010

2.0L diesel is a bit noisy and rattly, although very smooth on distance journeys and very reliable. We dove to the Czech Republic and back over Xmas, a 2000 mile round trip from London; and the Audi munched the miles comfortably. Plenty of space inside for the Mrs and kids to load everything that’s not bolted down, and the kitchen sink. I would say it’s well worth investing in the tiptronic 7 speed box, which comes with a very handy ’sport’ selection on the auto, with paddle shift on the steering wheel, great for leaving others for dust at the lights and comfortably accellerating away from tail-gaters on the motorway. Averaging about 40 mpg combined. I like this car and will probably go for an 3.0L A8 next time.

Top of the range. Bought new on 17th February 2010. Cost £41,000. November 16th 2010, having covered 9,000 miles my water pump packed up. As I write (10th December) there is no chance of a replacement as there are no replacement pumps in the UK! This car was sold to me knowing that the water pump with this model was an issue. My car has been fitted with nearly £2,000 worth of equipment to make it suitable for carrying dogs (my profession) but the car is now stuck somewhere in the depths of a car dealers awaiting spares that are not available!

Audi A6 Avant S Line Le Mans 2010

Fantastic car, as the engine runs in the fuel economy improves. I have the solar sunroof which works brilliantly in hot weather as it switches on the air blowers when parked and cools the interior. My one big complaint are the 19" low profile alloys, unlike other low profiles I have driven, the tyre offers absolutely no protection even when just brushing along a curb, therefore my alloys look an absolute mess, shame for a car that has only driven a few thousand miles and is only six months old. I was advised by an alloy specialist repairer that they have had several complaints of these alloys being damaged easily, but Audi deny this and say it is due to driver error! Shame, but all in all, a superb car.

Audi A6 Avant 2.0 diesel 2010

Not impressed, frankly it drives like a truck. It’s so wide and it makes my motorhome seem thin. However i like the interior nut that is about it. The mpg is poor and the ride is harsh and bumpy unless you are new smooth road. Too much road noise.
