Mazda MX-5 2.0 Coupe hard top convertible 2008

4 star review

The Middle East is a great place for anyone who likes cars. They’re cheap to buy and maintain, and petrol’s cheaper than water (a fiver for a full tank of super unleaded in Kuwait, anyone?) I’ve owned a number of cars over the years, new and old, exotic and mundane. The MX5 is right up there with the very best I’ve ever owned (a gorgeous 2001 Porsche 911 Turbo, a bulletproof 1994 Porsche 911 and a magnificent 2008 Golf GTI with a PDK gearbox). The Mazda’s reliable, cheap to maintain, and tremendous fun because of its rear wheel drive, light weight and eager engine and gearbox. The only niggles I’ve had are: (a) the engine’s a bit rattly sometimes for a car with only 30,000km on the clock, (b) the clutch squeaks (probably only needs a squirt of WD40), (c) the gearbox occasionally feels a bit notchy. and (d) the cabin’s a bit rattly (not helped by inevitable expansion and contraction caused by 50 degrees heat in the shade, no shade, and ice cold AC). However, these niggles pale when you drop down a gear and grin like a lunatic as the car’s size and handling flatter your driving ability and shorten your daily commute. I’ve wanted an MX5 for 15 years. However, I was crushed when my 2 younger brother’s derided them. One said it was a hairdresser’s car, and the other said I should wait until I could afford a proper sports car. I was young and stupid and so I submitted to the peer pressure. I should have ignored them. The Mazda is a great little car. Everyone should have one!

Mazda MX-5 1.8 Option pack 2008

After a years ownership, I’m usually bored with a car, and the MX5 is no different. The performance is fair, the gearbox is poor, MPG around town is about 25 mpg, though on a run approaching 50, mainly because you can’t find any roads to go fast on these days. It’s fairly comfortable, if a bit cramped. The pedals, being too far away, determine your seat position (height 5ft 9ins) because you have to push the clutch pedal right to the floor, which I find irritating. I’ve had the wheel nuts replaced under warranty through rust, and there are one or two more nuts rusting. I don’t like the Mazda dealers that I’ve come across; and wasn’t even offered a coffee when having a service at JCT Leeds. I expected to be inventing reasons to drive it this summer, but that’s not been the case. I’ve only done just over 3,000 miles. The best bit is that, everywhere I go, people love it, and I get loads of envious glances and envious remarks. I don’t like to disillusion them by saying how average it is. I honestly don’t know what all the fuss is about, and their glowing reputation is not deserved.

Mazda MX-5 Roadster Special Edition 2008

5 star review

I have driven lots of convertibles in the past 25 years. They have included the Merc CLK, Porsche Boxster, Toyota Celica, Ford Escort and the Honda S2000. Nothing compares to the MX5 I am driving now, it’s so beautiful and it drives as well as the more expensive convertibles I have driven before and it cost less to buy and to insure and to run. It also gets lots of attention from the general public; especially when the roof is down. I would recommend this car to anyone.
