Well... 5 out of 6 vans did have the turbo or head gasket replaced at 60K to 80K motorway miles from new (carried light trade tools, not bricks max 400 kg) and achieved 32-35 mpg. Also experienced all sorts of electrical problems and ball joints as standard going off each at 30K. Another company, same Traffic but 2009 model: Endless electrical problems on all 40 out of 40 vans; service lights coming one, or at night-time the headlights start moving up or down, or both headlight bulbs go after just 2 weeks of being newly fitted. Steering has light/heavy dead bands, so you can oversteer. The clutch was adjusted on many of the vans at 50-60K, then new one at 90K. Some vans survived clutch replacement to 100-110K, but no longer. Now a Vivaro, the ball joints, fish bones each needed replacing at 10-15K. Now at 70K and it has black smoke. Heating/air con on all vans above is good but it is impossible to adjust the temperature. Aircon on many vans was out of use by the second year due to leaking gas. All the vans did have problems with door locks and windows lift mechanisms. The radio has poor reception on the Trafic/ Vivaro and is very unstable on cornering. It is also not good on speed bumps when compared with a Toyota Hiace. The good bit is it’s more comfortable to drive than a VW T5, but the Transit has better back support (I bought a Transit for myself).

A most comfortable and spacious cab that is easy to drive, but that’s it. After 2.5 years (70k) the gears disappeared. Then the hydrolic unit was changed under warranty. After another 2 years and approx 70k the same again. The Renault dealer charged £270 for diagnostics and over £3000+VAT to change the hydrolic unit again! Daylight robbery! It’s obviously a manufacturer’s fault. Stay away from Trafics!

Never again Trafic, never again Renault or any other French make!!!! I bought my one second hand with 40k miles and have had nothing but problems. December last year the clutch went costing £1,500 to replace. In May of this year I had my timing belt, water pump, front pads and front shock absorbers done at a cost of £2,500 and now a gearbox fault is showing! I have been quoted £3,500 for two gearbox parts and labour and because it’s an automatic one of the parts costs £2,436! I contacted Renault customer service and after an investigation they offered me 20% discount, which I have declined. I am going to pay it off ASAP sell it then and go back to VW.

Is it just me then? I bought mine secondhand with a full service history. Other than regular sevices, and tyres and brakes, the only problems I have ever had are: The gear linkage cable coming off (fixed in 5 mins with a cable tie, which lasts about 3 months. Or get new selector cables. I’d stick to cable tie option) and the driveshaft cv joint. My vehicle has now covered 212,000 miles and it’s the best vehicle I’ve ever worked. I did swear I would never buy another Renault after being stitched up with an Espace once, but I’m so glad I changed my mind.

I’ve been driving a company 2007 Renault Trafic dCi 115 SWB Quickshift 6 from new. I’ve now done 64k over 2 years across UK and Ireland consisting of long motorway journeys as well as lots of local start/stop urban trips as a private user. Good Points: The van is comfy and not bad at fuel if driven professionally. Good brakes/stopping distance when in emergency (ABS, EBD and Brake Assist as standard). Good gear ratios. Bad Points: Above 60mph it is significantly louder inside the cabin and it causes tiredness far quicker over many hours journeys. 115 BHP with a heavy load in the bay is not something that cheers up, causing persistent shifting, 6-5-6, uphills. The front windsreen is horrible as it is not sunlight reflective and with no A/C it’s not much fun to drive in the summer time (open windows makes too much noise). Revolutions are limited to 4k - be aware when downshifting for overtaking or you might end with no torque on wheels. First and reverse gear synchros are starting to be a bit dodgy now (64k miles) despite clutch saving driving and the revolutions matching when downshifting. The indicator stalk tends to flip to counter position during fast steering manevours (itself for sure). Minor oil leaks. One of three bolts holding Power Steering Pump snapped in half. Fuel lines require bleeding if the van run outs of fuel completely - be sure to have proper allan key, syringe, off container fuel and 20 minutes time to be able to get back on track or AA/RAC might tow you away. Generally if looked after and well driven it won’t let You down; not a one breakdown only a few punctures.

Bought the van 3 months ago. Crank shaft sensor faulty, but now brilliant. Don’t thrash it and it will be ok. Good luck.

I bought a Trafic 115bhp on a 57 reg second hand on 60k and have done 20k in a year. My gear change has gone stiff 3 times so I can’t get it into gear unless forcing it. Mechanic says it’s some roller bearings on the top of the gearbox, which constantly need greasing and freeing off. Renault have done this twice under warranty then refused on the 3rd time. Now the engine warning light has come on and the van has started juddering like a miss fire. Took it to Renault who say it was a fault with the injectors getting water in and shorting out, which they said they had repaired, only to get it back and its still as bad but with no warning light on the dash and to top it off I had it back 3days and the gear change has gone stiff again. Can anybody help me? This is the worse car/van I have ever owned, never again will I buy a Renault.

I have a renault trafic 1.9 07. Don’t buy one, the gear box is no good. My diff has gone at 71,000miles, the total cost of repairs are £2,800. I’ve had this van from new, it cost £14,000 what a waste of time. Renault will not do the repairs? IF YOU HAVE ONE GET RID BEFORE 70,000 MILES. WARNING DONT BUY RENAULT !!

I have the 57 plate Trafic van, 34000 miles and it needs a new clutch. The slave cylinder has been fixed under warranty but I was then told that the new clutch would cost me £1052. Nothing but trouble.

The van is a year old and has done 18,000 miles without a problem. Comfy to drive; great with fuel; only downside is the lwb version isn’t that long. Could have done with being just that little bit longer. Value for money though and I will be buying another in 3 years time.

This van really stands out from the crowd thanks to some very stylish bodywork. Getting your company name noticed whilst on the road is not to be underated and this van certainly achieves that. The van itself is very easy and enjoyable to drive and comes with a good standard spec. Excellent value for money.
