I bought mine with about a month left on the three year warranty and 33,000 on the clock. The timing belt broke, but Vauxhall did not want to know and it cost me £1700 to put it right as the head has to be replaced as you cannot get steel injectors out of a aluminium head. Guess what? It had to have another new head at 55,000 miles on the clock; the same problem steel injectors aluminium head the first garage had put an after market head gasket on instead of a genuine Vauxhall head gasket. It fell apart and started overheating. Disappointed? Yes! If it’s going to go wrong it’s expensive.

I bought this van 1 year ago. It had been well looked after before I got it and that’s the key with these vans. I’ve had a few now and apart from usual wear and tear items they are a good van. The only thing that lets them down is the gearbox. I’ve had the Master Vivaro and Nissan vans and their boxes always go; it starts with 3rd gear normally then just gives up. I’ve found a company in Hertfordshire that exchanges or recons yours called Abbey Auto Transmissions. I have had a few of these vans now and would recommend them, you just have to make sure it’s been well serviced.

Worst buy ever!! Van has had so much work on it since it was bought brand new. 4 fuel pumps (every 20k miles!!!) gear linkage x 2 now in for a new gear box and clutch, would never bother again.

I’ve had my Vivaro nearly 4 years, it certainly seems like a good enough van. No probs. Nothing out of the ordinary for me to afford. I change oil @ 6000’s and happy enough at 109 000. Happy days so far! (54 000miles and no probs) Probably go for a transit next for a bit more power though.

I bought a 1.9 Vivaro (54) nearly 12 months ago, my only problems I have got since July is that the stop light and engine light flash intermittently the temperature needle zooms from min to max then after 7-8 minutes it goes off might not do it again for a few days theres also a whirring sound when I turn the engine off, secondly the airbag light stays on but usually if you stop driving then restart it goes out. I have had it checked out and the results say no fault found and no stored fault. I believe the stop/engine sensor is connected to the flywheel could it be a bad connection, damp and the airbag sensor is under the passenger seat could this be the same or is it more likely a fault in the engine management system. My mechanic says as it’s not showing a fault the vehicle is safe to drive but its quite annoying.

Bought new in 04 after driving all the vans on the market this was by far the best. Had the option 2.5 which is the better engine, being a mechanic I do oil change every six months, then MOT/service yearly, apart from electric window motors packing up (£45 each) not had a moments trouble ’til this week. Just started slight oil leak from bell housing, so gearbox off job, all those people complaining about bad gearboxes, more like bad driving thinking they’re in a sports car, take your time changing gear ’til warmed up then no problems will happen. I have worked on Transit, Vito, Sprinter, VW, Citron, Fiat, all have gearbox problems when rushed in winter until warmed up. Mine cost £22,000 lwb high roof air con exter door with opening window electric pack, top of range stereo. Best machine I have ever bought, 2.5 built in Spain, great! 1.9 built in Luton need we say more....

I would never touch another Vauxhall. I purchased a 54 plate 2.5 diesel turbo SWB with 68000 miles on the clock with a new exchange engine fitted supplied and fitted by Vauxhall. After 16,000 miles the bottom bearing gave up the ghost. After many phone calls to Vauxhall they agreed to replace the engine but I had to pay for the fitting, so I agreed. Now, after 27,000 and 18 months later the engine has decided to pack up again. Vauxhall are refusing to do anything about it all do I’ve got the engine checked by an independent Aauxhall approved dealer who said it’s a manufacturing fault but still Vauxhall refuse to do anything about this. I won’t go on about the three gearboxes and the three inlet manifolds the three sets of injectors. It will take a lot for Vauxhall to turn me round...

I bought this van 3-4 years ago, with 27,000 on clock. It is now coming up to 90,000 an it still starts and drives like new. My only complaint is the lack of power when motorway driving/overtaking. The rear hubs failed at 30,000 and I spent £1000 at 72,000 miles - all new pads, disks hubs bearings, rear stub axles and cambelt. I am now looking to trade against Trafic Sport 115PS. I would keep this van for another 20,000 miles but lack of power is pi**ing me off.

I like the van but I recently had problems with the clutch, changing gear was hard and I had to force it into gear, especially when it was cold. I changed the clutch, slave and master cylinders but it was the same if not worse and I had a nightmare bleeding the system, any ideas what is wrong please?

I am a fully skilled motor technician, I’ve worked for 31 years in the trade. I’ve had experiance with 04 van, starter fault ,track rod ends with the most movement I’ve ever seen ,ball joints worn badly, gearbox faults, oil leaks. We recently serviced 04 van, used vauxhall engine oil and filter, now oil pressure light and stop light illuminates on dash and after road testing and parking van brake servo now not working due to vacuume pump fault.I would not have one of these vans if it was given to me. Utter crap. I feel sorry for people who rely on their van for their work, spends most of its life in the garage for exspensive repairs. Much better off with a Toyota Hiace and no garage bills.

Used 6 x days a week, bought it with 20,000 now at 64,000. It is the 1.9 CCTi version. No problems with g/box. In fact no problems at all. Best van I’ve had and beats the Vito that cost me a damn fortune to keep on the road by miles. I’d definatley buy another one down the road.

For some reason every time the van has an M O T it needs new brake pads and discs, but other then that it is a great van, it has never let me down and it is on the road 7 days a week. Fuel consumption is fantastic. The only thing that worrys me are the reviews on here about the gear box. The van has done almost 79,000 and I don’t really want to spend all that money on a new gear box but I really don’t want to get rid of the van.

Had the van since new. Reassuring to hear I’m not the only one with gearbox and clutch problems... mine went at 32,000 miles. I live in a very hilly part of Scotland and am now on my 3rd set of discs. Comfy enough van but I’m getting a Transit.

Contrary to my previous report, never again will I have one of these. Once it reached 100,000 miles everything went pear-shaped - starter, alternator, steering rack, all front ball joints and bushes, drive-shafts, and now gearbox whining in third. It’s paid of in 2 months thankfully, by that time there will be a box of matches and petrol can waiting for it... if it makes it that far. DON’T BUY ONE OF THESE IF VALUE YOUR BUSINESS - THIS HAS NEARLY FOLDED MINE DUE TO UNRELIABILITY!

Just gone onto a mere 29.000 miles and the gearbox has had to go in as the bearings etc have gone, have never ground the gears and have always changed gear smoothly, now find out its going to cost about £1500 to fix really ******* off would have bought a Transit as before so will never buy one of them again, haven’t even paid for it yet. Beware, the running costs are expensive, also turbo sensor went - £120.00.

Well my experience of this van is thankfully short, but not sweet. I started a new job 5 weeks ago, picked up the van from Arnold Clark van centre in Glasgow, 4 days late after a set of injectors, clutch and MOT @99,000 miles. I drove 2000 miles and the gearbox packed in, wouldn’t select 1st, 2nd, 4th or reverse!! The lease company have pulled the plug on the contract as it’s too expensive to run now, being a 54 plat and now over 100kmiles. not a bad van to drive, a bit lacking in the oomph department and if you don’t like courtesy cars or motorway hard shoulders its one to be avoided!!!
