Nissan X-Trail sve diesel 2003

4 star review

We purchased a 2003 sve diesel in 2004 with 15k on the clock and the car has been very, very reliable. I will not pay £60 per hour to main dealers and get ripped off, we use a local mechanic who services once a year. Last year it had a new accelerator sensor £700, had to wait 27 days as no parts available in UK or Europe!! This year it needs a new fuel pump, £1,800 new, £900 reconditioned. The car has covered 80,000 miles from new , it has been a great car, but in the last couple of years has started getting expensive. On the whole one of the best cars we have owned, but maybe time to move on. I fancy a VW Touran.

Bought from a Nissan Dealer 6 months old in 2004. Selected for lots of leg room, good mpg (39) and 5-speed box. Joy to drive and excellent in the snow. Has had the injectors replaced under Warranty and the battery, now done 90,000 (2011) Now the down side - The fuel filter body was replaced to fix a leak last year, as it would not start and run properly. Now the Fuel pump has gone (Nissan diagnosis) and will cost £1,850 + VAT + labour (engine-out). Reluctant to pay out such exhorbitant prices. The Suction Valve (the bit actualy faulty) would be a much simpler fix, but the part is not available from Nissan. The fuel pump is not made by them. I think I will have to bite the bullet and hope for the best . Disappointed as very good overall - I see so many other reports above of similar story.

Lots of space and well equiped for a 2003 car. Problem is that expensive things break down on these cars! We needed a new intercooler (which is just like a radiator but laid on its side - it cools the air to the engine) and were quoted over £2000 for the part alone!!!! That is approximately 18% of the vehicles original new price! Why do Nissan attempt to rip customers off in this way? The part must cost about £50 to make. We managed to buy a good second-hand one off ebay for £30! but I will NEVER EVER BUY ANOTHER NISSAN simply because of the rip off prices for parts + the dealers are unhelpful and hopeless. I’ll go back to VW!

Bought s/h with 30k now up to 71k. Fully serviced. Car us a real contradiction: great to drive but every day you wonder what next is going to go wrong. Camshaft sensor failed 12k miles ago, replacement etc cost £200 but already it is failing - sometimes the car starts, sometimes it does not and towing power is down. Intercooler has a leak; door seals are coming off; exterior window trim is corroding; passenger door locked shut and could not be opened, door had to be dismantled as lock corroded; tailgate lock corroded. I love it & hate it - a super vehicle spoiled by poor quality control and the ever present awareness (unknown when I bought it three years ago!) that this model has a serious history of failed turbos and intercoolers. I would not have another.
