It’s a pity you can’t put minus stars or link every google search to this to see reviews of Renault or Megane before people purchase one. I’ve had mine 5 years and I bet I’ve spent nearly £2500 on things I’ve never before spent on a car and most of these were electriclal faults. The latest issue has completely killed the car and I’ve just gone and purchased a Vauxhall. My UPC unit got fried after it rained one day 2 years ago. That fault plus the one that the frying caused to the engine management system cost me £1200 in one visit to Renault! They replaced the UPC unit but didn’t fix the cause of the leak I had told them about and 2 weeks later the new unit got fried! I made sure they paid for that replacement (very common fault). The unit has lasted just over 2 years and has gone again, though in stages; it wouldn’t start when you asked it to, I have had the RAC out about 6 times to get me to the garage, it actually started after pushing it to the tow bar on 2 occassions and cost me a fuel pump I didn’t need. After breaking down for the 10th time at home last week, I went to Vauxhall and purchased a new Corsa (which I had read umpteen reviews on as well as other cars. I also found Renault had the highest electrical fault rates of ALL manufacturers). All I will tell anyone is ALWAYS research any purchase. I do for everything these days. TVs, computers etc. Shame I didn’t do it for the Megane. It is now an obstacle on the side of the road about 10 minutes away from my house. I have used up all my allocated RAC callouts so I’ve got to get someone to tow me home, then call the local scrap dealer as I’m sick of the sight of it. So much so I thought I would do this review after googling breakers yards in Birmingham! Thanks Renault for a nice looking car with all the bits and extras I ever wanted on a car, except rubbish MPG and umpteen stupid faults that cost a fortune to fix!!

Got made redundant in May 2010. Had to let my 55 plate Focus ST go for something more economical. True, tax cheaper, insurance cheaper, 20,000 miles between services. But . . . . . my ST did 20 to the gallon at 280bhp (yep - chipped and tuned) but the average mpg on the Megane shows 34 with just one third the power (1.6 petrol). Can’t be right surely? The clutch judders when cold but improves when hot. Only 35,000 on the clock. 6 owners though (what does that say??). The plastic bumpers front and rear are different colours from the metal body work and also don’t line up. The doors and tailgate "wobble" when opened. They most certainly don’t have the solid, satisfying "clunk" when closed compared to the Ford. The whole plot is a "flexible flyer" compared to the Ford. Can’t see a reason for 205 tyres when the chassis is so bouncy and twisty. The exhaust judders too. All straps and mountings are in place but it can be heard on up/down changes, accelerating and braking and cornering. The new wipers squeak. I shouldn’t compare a basic Megane to a focus ST. But, even the basic focus is so much more solid and feels far better engineered. I bought the Megane because it was cheap and low mileage. I had a Renault Fuego many years ago but it didn’t have any build faults as such. It simply rusted into oblivion way before they had a chance to surface. Compared to the Ford the Megane has a lot of endearing features but the niggles FAR outway the benefits.

I bought this car in September 2009, I have to say its a great looker, but that’s all it really is apart from a pain in the a**e. Had nothing but problems from the start. Only starts when it wants to, dashboard now showing ELECTRONIC FAULT, only Renault can rectify this problem which means departing from a lot of hard earned cash. This seems to be a common problem with Megane’s or shall I say RENAULT’S. Moral of the story DO NOT BUY A RENAULT. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED...

Hi all. I’m a young South African individual and I have had this car for close to a year. I own the 1.9 DCi full spec with the leather and all the bells and whistles, which I bought second hand with low mileage. The car is in an all around brilliant condition, however, I have replaced my clutch, suffered with "Injection Fault" and have had to change the crank pulley as well amongst numerous other things. Now I don’t know what this will convert into as far as UK currency is concerned but I have spent no less than R25,000 south african rands (Hard earned) on repairs for this car. I love the performance and asthetics, however they are not enough when it comes to going for a reliable car, I think it’s safe to say I’ll be sticking to VW/Audi from now on.

I have now owned this car for 3 years and it is fair to say it has been a nightmare. For the past 18 months I have had the service light on constantly and "Check Injection" on the screen. Every morning I have the hassle of getting it started, which takes me around 5 or 6 attempts. Once started I then have to battle my way through a massive cloud of black smoke which comes out of the back. Once the car is warm the car starts no problem but when it is cold and been left standing for a couple of hours it is a pain. I have taken it to my local garage and to Renault main dealer; both of which cannot seem to come up with a proper solution (Renault told me it would be my computer which would cost £1500 but I just don’t believe them). After being told by friends and relatives it could be the glow plugs I took it to my local garage and had them changed. The service light and injection reading disappeared and the car started on the button first time in the morning. Then a day later the service light reappeared and the check injection back. I am now fed up of the embarrassment of starting it in the car park at work at the end of the day with everyone staring at the black smoke so I am writing to warn people - DON’T BUY A RENAULT!!!!!

Loved the shape of the car and looks very nice from the inside. Only thing is since i bought the car a year and half ago we have had nothing but engine problems with it and now only after 53000 miles the turbo has blown in the car and you don’t expect something like that to happen on a new car and now it will cost 1800 just to repair the car which I find very expensive.
