Though comparatively young compared to most of its competitors, The Independent, which was launched in 1986, is firmly established as one of the leading compact newspapers in Britain.
It began life as a broadsheet but is now thriving not just on newsstands, but also on the internet. The Independent online edition has many popular sections including a living segment, which contains its motoring pages.
Generally, the articles that appear within the motoring section of The Independent online take two distinct formats – a road test or a 'verdict'.
The road test formula used in The Independent is well established with specifications of a model, along with a review written from a test carried out by one its journalists. To maintain impartiality, The Independent also informs readers of the other cars in the same marketing area so they can research all of the alternatives and find the option that is right for them.
The verdict works in a similar manner to the road test providing all of the key information about the latest vehicles including a review and a list of the model's specifications. However, where the verdict differs to a road test on The Independent online is that it includes readers' own brief reviews of the car so that users can gain a 'verdict' from those with the most first-hand knowledge – the car drivers themselves.
